I guess it could help a little.  Rally NY has been going for 4 years now (although this years event was cancelled due to tragic events that took place in the NorthEast ClubRally Division).
It is based in Andes, NY in Delaware County.  The stages are all dirt/dust/gravel.  Delaware County is a big chunk of red clay, so all of the dirt and dust is red.  Which brings up my first warning, don't wear white!  I've been to it every year that its been running and its been growing in leaps and bounds.  Since its a ClubRally event its not huge, its very easy to find good viewing spots, and you can walk around the service area and talk to the drivers/co-drivers and other team members, and you can snap tons of pics of some really hot cars.  There's always a good handfull of Evos, WRXs, STis and DSMs.  Andes is a really small town, but they do have a small store for food, drinks, gas, etc...  In the past the event has started on Friday night and gone through Saturday night or Sunday afternoon.  If you like rally at all then you will love this event.  Any other questions, feel free to ask.

I think the closest exit off of 88 would be one of the Oneonta exits.  I think its 17, but I never pay any attention.  Once you get to Oneonta its about an hour or so south on 28.
