It's back at my moms house, I just haven't had any time really to look at anything else, and she doesn't want to spring for a new speed sensor without knowing if that's going to be the fix or not  :|

I know what you mean, but no, she wouldn't have crawled under the dash to look at anything.  And even if she did, I don't think she would've touched anything without asking someone first.

Anyone know where I can find a factory service manual online for this car?  I've only seen for newer ones

No clue on where you might find the service manual, but I got my manuals from rs25.  I'd ask around, or search.  My guess is someone's got PDFs.  Wasn't there a leggy-specific forum, too?

I managed to find it, got print outs of a few key pages.....just have to see now if I'll have a chance to run through these tests on the wires and sensors

Yeah its LegacyGT.com
2005 Subaru Impreza 2.5rs wagon

1995 Subaru Brighton Rs (sold)
2002 Hyundai Accent (sold)
1999 Chevy Cavalier (sold to my brother)
1998 Subaru Legacy wagon (traded to Blackparis)
1997 Subaru Legacy (Parted out and crushed)
1999 Honda Civic (Wrecked)
Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

Probably doesn't matter...but here's an update:

With the FSM I was able to narrow it to definitely being the speed sensor at the tranny.  The resistance through the sensor was something like 40-50% higher than where it should have been....all other wiring tested out fine and nothing looked burnt out on the back of the gauge cluster

Didn't have time to get a new sensor, but had her download Torque to her Droid for a GPS speedometer for the drive home

At least you seem to have figured it out.  The idle speed is still crap, though, no?

It's still in limp mode so the idle is still low...but smoothed out so it's just a low idle now, not something that wants to stall every time she stops moving....so that's not a huge deal
