oil on top of my turbo
« on: September 23, 2011, 08:28:33 PM »
Ok so yesterday i was driving up alt 7 and started smelling oil burning. Got to the exit 6 ramp and saw a lil cloud of smoke come up out of my hood... So i pulled over popped the hood and found oil sitting on top of my turbo. I took some pictures but idk how well they came out. But If anyone has any ideas on where to start looking that would be great. Im pretty mechanically sound but its my first turbo car so idk where to start. The cars an 04 sti with q decent amount of work done to it and the turbo Is an aps sr-55. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ok so it wot let me put the picture up at the moment pics to come.

it just looks so weird, like it started out as a blue silicone hose that turned black and semi-transparent or something  :?

anyway, only obvious place I can think for an external oil leak is the oil feed line.  I'd wipe it all off as clean as you can get it, then take a short drive and check again.  Maybe that way you can be looking at a small puddle where it's leaking rather than searching an entirely covered area

Ok sounds like a plan. I can see the oil feed line and it doesnt look like there is any oil around it. It's a braided stainless line going in but ill do that first thing in the am and then get back to ya

That t'd line is related to your evap/breather system.  I would check out the inside of those lines.  most STi's get some some blow by.  if you're getting a bit more it will collect and drip/drain/run out at the connections.    Do you have a catch can or air/oil sep.?

Also, that line should run down next to the turbo to the top of the block.  It should not be connected to the turbo.

I do have a perin catch can and it does run to the block not the turbo. It was pretty dark out when i looked last night but Ill pull that apart and maybe thats where its coming from?

Ok so I pulled those lines apart and there wasnt any oil in them. But i did notice that there Is oil coming out of my bov... Gonna assume thats not a good sign. Everything ive read says bad turbo seals? Also would that cause the oil on top of it?

Idk truthfully. Everything was done on the car when i bought it. The car Itself has 44k miles. I've tried to find the original owner to find everything out exactly but with no luck. I talked with the owner of ecs tuning in conn who tuned the car last august and he gave me a run down of the parts that were on it but nothing has been done internally.

I could be wrong, but I believe bad seals should dump oil into your exhaust, not out onto the exterior of the turbo

i did notice that there Is oil coming out of my bov...
ummmm, never heard of that one. where is your bov located in this setup?

are there oil fittings on the top of the turbo that have been pluged.  A lot of turbo's center sections have multiple oil and cooling ports to allow for different setups, I would look there, but if the turbo is bad, it can leave oil in your intercooler piping.

Ok so i pulled some of the intercooler piping off yest. There was a lil bit of oil in it but not a ton. I dont want to have to go through pulling the dowpipe off but if i have to I can. The bov is tied in right b4 the intake manifold you should be able to see it in the pic. Idk where to go from here. I've also noticed that ive lost about a qt of oil in the last month. Ugh lol

How many miles have you put on the car in the last month. Boxer motors are known to burn oil.

Sorry I've been sick as a dog for the last week so I haven't been able to get much farther than i have but i will update when I pull the downpipe. I'm prob gonna setup a compression and leak down test also just to check if anything else is going on.

Ok so not good news... Had a compression test done cylinder 1 is at 100, 2 is 118, 3 is 120 and 4 is 75... So its looking like its time for a rebuild... Anyone have any good local shops or any idea how bad It would be to do it myself? I've pulled Chevy small blocks apart but nothing like this...

Happy with the service? HELLS YES.
I've gotten phone calls, emails, video links and pictures almost on a daily basis! Updates on shipments, build progress, dealing with blouch... all kinds of shit. I picked up a few things and shipped them out and they were totally cool with it. Had it not been for the delays regarding the turbo, it would have been less then 4 weeks. 1 week was spent just waiting for the block. Also, they have there own rides. They go to all the hill climbs in NH, VT, ME and they race the shit outta some shit, Mid Ohio, VIR, Rally's,  they love racin and know what they are doing. Bunch of 1st and 2nd place plaques on the walls. But yea, damn that cylinder number 4.
I'll be there 10am tomorrow, I'll give 'em a heads up for ya!

So a little update. The seals were bad in my turbo so that's where most of my oil loss was coming from... I pulled the turbo on thanksgiving and brought it to d&w in latham to have a new cartridge put in it because of course its not rebuildable... I should have it back by Tom and I can't wait because the 99 4cyl accord I'm driving is killing me lol
