Time to Complete the swap
« on: December 11, 2004, 03:51:41 PM »
As you all know, Gabe has an 01 RS engine in his 94 Impreza.  The 01 engine is running off of a reflashed 94 ecu.  It runs, but it runs FAR from perfect. IT hesitates, stalls, starts hard etc etc.

So we decided to put my old ECU and Rob's 99 wiring harness in his car. As you could imagine the combination of an 01 ECU (MAP sensor control) a 99 Wiring harness (MAF sensor control) in a 94 L (non OBD-II) makes it a very difficult task.

We have some pictures of the wiring mess.

I only wish we had pictures of us removing the wiring harness in Rob's car. It was dark, raining and cold.  We pulled my car up to the front of Rob's car, lifted the hood, attached a tarp from my hood to Rob's hood. Left my car running and headlights on (for warmth and light).  It worked great in the engine compartment.  But in the cab we pulled the dash out and wiring harness out using our cell phones as flashlights.  It was one for the record books that's for sure.  Our flashlight batteries died after the first hour, that's why we were using the celli's.

That looks kinda like when A4>RS mated his s14 Wiring harness with the S13 engine management for the Redtop SR20 in his old 240SX :D

Im glad I didn't try to help him with that, and Im glad that I wasn't the one trying to figure out that wiring mess.... although Im sure it will be me soon, considering its time to start ripping apart the old car :(

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

When you say redid your trunk what do you mean?  I need to redo my trunk, but when I say redo my trunk, I mean I need to take out the crappy amp/subs/prefab box that are in there now, get something custom made, with 1 12", save some trunk space, & get a rack made for my amp & Sirius tuner.

Stereo wiring is cake... its the ECU wiring harness stuff that gets me (although I know, technically, can't be that difficult... but I have a tendancy to have my mind wander).

I'll be re-wiring all the harnesses in the Skylark... over time.

no ECU wiring to deal with there though :D

It is such a long/challenging project but its really a ton of fun to do it. I wouldnt LIKE to do it again but im having fun redoing it.  It just means that if one step goes right im moving on to the next.(AWD conversion). and if that goes right.....FI. all in time and if all goes well.   but in anycase it could turn out not to work but it would still be worth all the fun we're having

wait, you L doesn't have AWD?  I knew there were still models where they turned it off with the fuses but I haven't ever seen someone with one.

Well, it fired up and ran smooth.
Hasn't run in weeks and it started with no problems....  once we put the right ECU in there.  I forgot we had Rob's 99 ECU plugged into the wiring harness. the car started right up but was surging 2000 rpms. Then I realized that it was the MAF ECU and not the MAP ecu....   oops. So we plugged in the right ECU and VROOOOOOOOOMMMMM      the throttle was stuck open.  Silly wire wasn't where he was supposed to be.
Pulled the wire out of the way, set the idle and she purrrrrrred.

Felt really good. Gabe and I smiled for a while at our accomplishment up to that point.  Now we gotta get the heater core, ventilation ducting and dash back in.

Then I get my freakin garage back!
