Picking up the new car tomorrow
« on: October 10, 2011, 09:18:32 AM »
So long story short, after tons of money dumped into the old 2.5RS for repairs and whatnot, I'm finally donw with it and moving on to bigger and better things..

I'm picking up my new car tomorrow, a 2008 satin white WRX   8-)

Of course I've already been looking around and what mods are available and all that, but I wanted to see if anyone on here was familiar with what's out there for these cars..    Back when I had the STi everyone pretty much was going with the Acessport..   flashing the stage 1 map and then after getting a free flowing exhaust flashed the stage 2 map..  from there it was custom tune and then bigger turbo and injectors, fuel pump, FMIC, etc..

From what I've been seeing this car comes pretty soft from the factory..   looks like it could definitely use some sway bars amongst some other items to stiffen it up.
Keep in mind I'm not looking to dump a ton of money into this like I did with the STi, but I definitely want to add some power and better cornering and whatnot.

Any help is appreciated and I'll be looking around in the meantime to see what route other owners have went.

Thanks!

Congrats, sir!  There's a few '08 owners around now; you should have a pretty good bank of knowledge to draw from... :)

Thanks man!  I liked the RS and everything but was just dumping more money into it than what it was even worth just to try to get it to run right..   not to mention the rust that was taking over the whole car..   it was just a lost cause.

Definitely at least go StageII.

I threw a Torqued Performance map on M2KS' car last week, and his car took it like a champ. He can shed more insight (he ran both the Cobb/Perrin maps in the past).

Yea i'd definitely be interested in hearing about that..
When I had the STi everything was pretty much Cobb AP and then from there you would get Protuned.
By time I got rid of the STi pretty much everyone was using Opensource.  I feel like I partly starting over because I'm not even sure what people are using to tune with these days..   not that I will be doing the tuning myself, but I at least want to try to buy whichever unit is the most widely used and only buy once.  I just don't have the extra cash to be buying the same parts/tuning software twice if I can help it.

Hey pete its nate fisher your 08 wrx has the same platform as my 2011 xt with the td04. Im tuned with an accessport ,turbo back exaust and 3 port bcs with a clark turner etune stage 2 really transformed things but got used to it a little to quick. So im currently putting on a vf52 and a process west intercooler in hopes to hit around 300whp. Theres alot out there for your car you just need to shop around, try maperformance.com or importimageracing.com.

The SPT/STI springs alone made a HUGE difference on Jays02RS's 08 wrx.

Sways, endlinks, wider tires/wheels, better brake pads would make a huge difference.  I just about shit my pants when I found out that a 3,300 pound car was rolling on 205mm wide potenzas.  My 2,500 pound beemer is on 205's.

Gonna keep the old for rallycross?

How much rust did you have to deal with?  I'd be amazed if it's worse than mine...

The old car was a disaster..  Goldsteins gave me a 1000 for it and I felt lucky I got that much for it  ;-)

I have the Perrin Maps for an 08 WRX,  Stg 1 & 2   91 and 93 oct. somewhere. After the reflash to stg 1, the low end tq gain was incredible.

For the most part its just like an 06/07 WRX except with a little extra low end grunt {I think they changed something on the engine}  Sways, tires, springs, will make gobs of difference.   235/40/18 tires fit with no modifications.

As for springs, be careful what you get.  Many of the springs were known to blow the struts easily;  even the spt ones.   Some people believe it can be caused by a poor installation, but many people think the struts are just plain garbage and can't handle anything lower / stiffer.   The pinks seemed to work out good as did the swifts.

You can pick up a set of 09+ take offs from someone that went with coilovers or get an upgraded strut from bilstein  {I dont recall anymore what company sold the spring/strut package}..

Also if you go wider tires,  get a set of mudflaps.  The paint on the 08s were prone to chipping especially with wider/lower offset tires.

Check out 3gwrx.com   good site.

Lastly.  wax that bitch.  The satin white shimmers nicely when clean.  I miss my hatch somedays

Thank you for the advice!  I was pretty busy last night driving aro8und and getting used to everything.
I like it a lot so far..   just trying to get used to the more mature look of it compared to the STi and the RS.

So what is required to use the Perrin maps?  Do they sell a unit like Cobb's AP?

Perrin makes maps for the AccessPort. I ran one for a while until I had it tuned specifically for my car. I DO know of someone selling an AccessPort....

So........ where are those pictures =p
2005 Subaru Impreza 2.5rs wagon

1995 Subaru Brighton Rs (sold)
2002 Hyundai Accent (sold)
1999 Chevy Cavalier (sold to my brother)
1998 Subaru Legacy wagon (traded to Blackparis)
1997 Subaru Legacy (Parted out and crushed)
1999 Honda Civic (Wrecked)
Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

oh hideous front grill... I have seen them painted completely satin black which made it 100000x better.   And its cheaper than the sports grill..  Glad to see you still have the old license plates.  White cars look hideous with the new ones.
