wagon to sedan conversions
« on: November 07, 2011, 12:25:43 PM »
I have been researching this and I haven't found a definite answer on it. I want to do at least the front end for now, would parts are needed? I have a warranty on the car so I can't replace control arms yet but what do I need?
For further down the road, what is needed to convert the rear end? Is it just the fenders that are wider or do the doors have the flare as well?

Oh yeah this is for a 2005 impress rs wagon btw.

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

Ok. And is the hood the same on both or will I need a different hood? I mean im still debating a sti hood but im starting to think this car will look awesome with the wide fenders, sti bumper, and lowered a little with the stock rs hood.

for the rears you will need rear sedan doors and and quarter panels from a sedan. I might be picking up a good sedan shell you could get all of the parts needs for it off of.  I'll keep you posted if i pick up another project

Would the rear wagon bumper work/ look right with the sedan fenders?

yes it just needs to be pulled a little on the ends to fit with the sedan quarters, since it is ABS plastic it can bend really easy.

because I wanted the wagon.  I need a new front bumper and fender from dents and paint chips from the previous owner so I was thinking about going with the wider body anyway.

Save your money, not trying to bring you down but the only reason id put money into your car is for maintenance or if you found a smoking deal on an STi/WRX swap which in turn doesn't make it you daily anymore.  Although it is fun today mod a car, Id get the thing 100% up to date maintanence wise, then save some cash for future maintanence, then start slow with bolt ons.

Myself, being older and wiser now, wished someone could of tell me that advice at 18 lol. I now have gobs of money into performances parts, and now I have to do a clutch/Fly, Timing Belt, and most likly wheel bearings. All of this while getting a 1200 plus tattoo, then xmas and GF's birthday. It just sucks cause it usually all happens at once too. I have the money for all of this now, but thats my house fund lol. This sums up why I'm toying with this idea. I got in an accident and need to replace headlights/bumper and my fenders and hood are all fubar from the PO anyway, so why not (plus I may be able to get the sedan stuff for cheap, cheaper than wagon stuff). I plan on keeping the car so I don't mind putting money into it.

EDIT: I'm not even considering the rear, though. Not worth it.

Wagon over Sedan any day.  If the WRX sedan had at least a fold down rear seat, it'd be a different story, but it doesn't.  Very lame.

To OP, I'd skip the conversion.  Doing the rear is going to cost some pretty serious cheese. Cut, weld, grind, sand, paint.  Labor is what'll kill you.

yeah I knew that. The rear was something I would do if it ends up a summer only car.  The front on the other hand is a different story.  It seems like sedan stuff is cheaper only because there are more of them around.  So to fix all the damage before it goes to be painted, I'm thinking I might start stock piling parts.  The car is still under warranty  until 103,000 miles so most "expensive" repairs that might appear will be covered (as long as its not my fault/regular maintenance)

It'd be great if you could find bumper & fenders from a San Remo Red Sedan (your color ?..) , but those suckers are pretty rare.

yeah I know, and the ones I do find are smashed or for a different year.  I mean at the moment, I am saving about $50 a week for the body work in the summer.  So even if I can't find the exact color, its not completely the end of the world.

I know the money issue has been said repeatedly, but no one has thrown out any actual numbers.
Last I was looking into this I was told by people who had done it already to plan $10-12K

Sorry, I didn't keep the list or required parts

Its ok, I am going to do the front for sure just because the parts I need are cheaper for a sedan then a wagon because there are more sedans being parted out.  The rear would be nice because it looks really really good but I figured it would be way to much to even consider on a $9,000 car.

You could always do some slimmer overfenders in the back, not the giant 'box' style.  Won't quite match but still looks cool IMO.
