Mods that you dont like

Lets talk about mods that bug you or you think are dumb.   :knuppel2:

Fruity ass ricer sticker collages on your back window, way too cliched:

Front lips, I think i've seen maybe 3 that don't look like a chintzy hunk of plastic glued to the bottom of your bumper.

anything that makes your car go faster is gay....why would you want that. pointless. stupid. (<---totally kidding and sarcastic.)

But on a serious note,
-roof "spoilers".....especially with a regular trunk spoiler as well.
-chrome wheels
-ridiculous camber (street cars)
-stuffed animals attached to your antenna/bumper
-painted drum brakes (besides black cus its better than looking like rotting, flaking shit)
-RUST (lol?)

  ?
there's a reason behind the properly designed ones....

agreed on the sticker bombing of windows, especially coupled with limo dark tint, often found on cars that look like they've backed into multiple things, or changed lanes into other cars....I mean, hell, the glass is only put there so you can see what's around you, but you're too cool to need that, right?

I don't care so much anymore about what stupid things people want to do to their cars, except when they're done so poorly that I'm afraid to drive behind you because that primered bumper looks like it might end up on my hood with a good gust of wind.  Or your stupid ass trailer hitch nuts, that are hovering half an inch off the ground because they were designed for a large pickup truck but you put them on your econo-box hatch, zip tied to god only knows what because that car could never support anything by a hitch, are going to ricochet off the ground and come through my windshield if you hit a pothole

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I have always assumed that hanging trailer hitch balls is meant to broadcast a love of balls.  Always thought it a little weird but, whatever...the guy loves balls, what business is it of mine? :2funny:

Every time I see those truck nuts, I always want to cut one of them off.  Though I think it would be hilarious to stick a pair of them, painted sparkly gold, on my RS.  (Off center, of course)

Mods I don't like on street cars:

Cheap Coilovers. Every Bro and their brother now-a-days thinks that the proper way to make a car handle is to buy the cheapest set of coilovers money can buy, add camber, and slam it to the ground. It really bothers me when they take off the well engineered stock equipment off an almost new car just to replace it with the stiffest coilovers because racecar.

Braided Stainless Brake Lines. Seriously, you don't need these on a newish car, brah. Most of the "slop" you feel is the firewall flexing. Get a master cylinder brace and fix the real problem.

Cone Filters/ "Short Ram" intakes. This is another common mod on the "must-do" list to modifying a car... Enjoy your hot air intake.

Edit: I see this is in the "lookin' good" section... ignore the above.

I don't like most body kits... or sticker bombed things.

I will admit that I am guilty of wanting this when I had turbo Subarus. Not because racecar, but because snow-packed-air-box.

It depends on what you consider "cheap" coilovers. Like Megan coilovers are decently constructed, perform well, and arent crazy stiff. They offer really stiff ones, but some are decent. But, theyre relatively cheap. 800$...I know people who have them and love them. Fairly durable, decent price, perform well. Now skunk2 "sleeves", different story.

I'd say slammed in general, on a street car, is kinda dumb......I don't care if your coilovers cost $800 or $3,000.....you can still ruin the handling equally well with both depending on how you do it

I like lowered cars and I plan on lowering mine, but not dropped to the ground, ripping bumpers off on speedbumbs. No. Thats TOO low. 800$ isn't a "cheap" coilover imo. its cheapER and may not be top quality, but its not complete shit either.

No, $800 is a DIRT cheap coilover setup, unless you're talking $800 PER coilover unit, in which case I'd say there's probably some quality there.

Go ahead and put one on a shock dyno, change damping settings and see what the readouts tell you.  In fact, see if it survives the entire test with consistent results.  Those same dynos have proven that TEIN units can also be complete garbage.  Malaysian sweatshops might make good sneakers, but I wouldn't trust my suspension to them.

$800 is a cheap coilover, on a pure cost basis.  I mean, what coilovers, new, are cheaper than that?  At WBM '07 I was talking with the Ohlins guys and their basic stuff was starting at 3 times that price.  I prefer cheap coilovers (so far used Megan and Tien)because I drive cheap cars and the driver is still the weak point.

True, but then again, most people are morons. They have their place for sure... but the guy who takes a bone stock car, ditches the airbox and attaches the cone to the MAF is doing it wrong.

^^^THIS^^^

That $800 would be much better spent on some KYB AGX (or equivalent) struts and some nicely matched springs. I have nothing against lowered cars... it's when you go too low and mess up the suspension geometry that we stop seeing eye to eye. BTW I love looking at "hellaflush" rides, I just wouldn't love looking at it in my driveway every day.

It depends on what you consider "cheap" coilovers. Like Megan coilovers are decently constructed, perform well, and arent crazy stiff. They offer really stiff ones, but some are decent. I put BC racing coilovers on my drift car this year (replaced KYB AGX and spring combo to comply with Club Loose rules) and immediately noticed a decrease in over all traction... it felt like it "handled" better (due to the decreased initial body roll) but the rear end would step out much sooner (at a lower speed) than with the other suspension. It's great for a drift car but it makes the car less capable on the street and at autocross (it leaks too many fluids to take on a real race track).

I think the skunk2 "sleeves" (think Eibach Ground Control) with a proper spring rate (since you can use any 2.5" coilover-style spring) on something like a Koni Yellow damper would give you better performance than any of the entry level JDM/Taiwanese/Chinese coilovers in the same price range and above.

Nah, oiled filter, and I'll be putting a small plate that prevents water from falling straight on the filter.  Wouldn't matter at speed.

I agree on the coilovers.  I have a set of Megans on my car right now, and while I'm struggling to find where the stupid rebound damp should be, they work fine.  Plus, I'm at stock height.  They do improve handling in my experience- The 378 exit from 787, I've been able to go faster round that with the Megans (although only tried with snow tires right now).

They aren't good, at all, but they work fine if you want some basic adjustability.  ...or if you want to scrape your oil pan off.

I'm not ok with this either, even though I rock rotas and generally am ok with knock-off or "replica" wheels... but XXR has gone one step too far.

I will die a little inside when some bro points at my CCWs on the RX-7 and asks if they are those new XXRs. On the other hand I'd love to get them in 17x10 or 18x10 so that I can use them as dirt cheap drift spares.

On a side note - Dave, these come in 16x8 with a BMW bolt pattern and would look great on the Dirty30

but the guy who takes a bone stock car, ditches the airbox and attaches the cone to the MAF is doing it wrong.

I did that on the MR2.  Then again, it's an old AFM-style unit where there's a flapper plate inside it.  Doesn't really make a difference there for turbulence or anything - just goes straight into the turbocharger anyway.

Okay, on my list of pet peeves:  Aftermarket Blowoff Valves.   I don't care if it's vent-to-air, 100% recirc or some fancy 50/50 unit.  The stock valve works just fine in most applications, unless you're running high boost levels where it doesn't.  If you're throwing 20psi at a stock WRX bpv and it leaks, fine - replace it with an aftermarket billet.   THEN SPEND SOME GODDAMN TIME TWEAKING THE SPRING ON IT TO OPEN PROPERLY SO YOU DON'T RIDE A BUCKING BRONCO WHEN YOU FEATHER THE THROTTLE.

If you're a newbie that uses a VTA, 50/50 or puts one on a stock or lightly modded car before you install an IC upgrade, exhaust, boost control or even a damn aftermarket air freshener, just kill yourself.  Also, all SRT-4 drivers can feel free to off themselves as soon as is convenient.  I know Dodge installed the BPV and it goes WHOOSH every time -  EVERY GODDAMN TIME - you touch the throttle, even when you're parallel parking downtown.  I heard six vents before the car was parked.  IS THAT REALLY NECESSARY.  I MEAN REALLY.
