Dull black plastic trim
« on: December 07, 2011, 04:27:47 PM »
I noticed the other day that the black plastic around my wipers and windows is very dull and faded looking.  Anyone suggest anything that will bring the color back other than spray paint / plastidip?

People in the detailing section on Nasioc had some answers, one was Meguiar's Back to Black, but i heard it wears off after a few washes.

scrub the hell out of it with diluted isopropyl alcohol (50/50 with distilled water) and a microfiber cloth or cotton balls
then follow up with something like Mother's black trim stuff....that worked well for me, and lasted for quite a while before needing to be redone

Please define a "while".  I dont want to have to re-do it every month.  At that point, I will just take it all apart and paint it.

im a body tech and honestly the longest lasting best way to make it look good. Is to scuff it down and spray some trim black on it

sorry, I don't really have an answer for that.  I know I've only applied the stuff like twice a year or so, whether that was because that's all it needed, or if it was because I kinda stopped caring and got lazy, I honestly don't remember   :uglystupid2:

It'll last awhile,  and besides who wants to spray clear coat on it and call it a day, that's  a 70's detailers trick  :uglystupid2: HA

Tell ya honestly you could just put some prime wax that's guaranteed not to stain trim and what not on it and it will last a good 6 mos , if not longer.

I would put like a  double refined , or Ultra refined carnubara paste wax.   Then instead of it being yellow.. It's white, therefore clear, which glows nicely  :coolsmiley:

I've used mother's back to black, isopropyl alcohol, peanut butter, etc. I switched to the actual black dye that you can pick up at any automotive store, and it works much better, lasts longer.

It does work, briefly, for buffing off wax.

Sounds like it has to come off for a long term solutions... Thanks.

The thought of squirrels constantly climbing my car searing for the peanut smell they experience is a no no.  I'd need a full automatic BB gun to keep up with those little pesky critters in my area.
