New York State enhanced Vehicle Inspection
« on: December 22, 2004, 01:53:44 PM »
As of 12/1/2004, even upstate, (outside the 5 boroughs of NYC) has an emissions inspection that includes hooking up to the OBD II port and checking the MIL (a/k/a CEL).  Does any one have any expierence with this yet.  I am considering an up-pipe and just passed the test, but next year....  No, I do not want to remove and reinstall it so save the band width and our time on that one.

Thanks

i'm on the project @ IBM for the NYVIP rollout. As of 4/1/05, it will be downstate as well. This doesn't apply to cars 95 and older...

If you are only considering an upipe,  you may want to think about an STI catless upipe, or a gutted WRX uppipe.  Both will appear "stock" in the event of a visual inspection. (I also recently passed this test, and there was no visual inspection on my car- just the obdII hook-up)  The upipe is used mostly for emissions control on cold startup- so theoretically you should be able to pass if your car is warmed up before inspection.

As long as you don't have a check engine light come on you are ok. A friend is running full cat less and dosen't have a cel(resitor mod and anti fowlers). so it should be alright as long as the shop will let it go for no cats. There will be a few trick discovered that will help you pass the inspection.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but now that I think about it.. if you have the electrical CEL fix, the OBDII scan picks up on it and you fail.  but if you have the mechanical CEL fix, the OBDII scan thinks all is well...  :?:

Hope that is true, because I had the mechanical CEL fix performed.

In the spring, I know people at SGS Testcom (the people who have the project for NYVIP) and we're going to test my car and see how it does. I have the pony express electrical fix, so we'll have to see.....however, by then I may just have the hydra, so i'll prolly just have to register my car in Alabama, heheheh

FastFreddy is right.  This is what the fast one and I deal with every day.  your car will pass as long as youve completed a drive cycle without throwing a code and illuminating your check engine light.  the only thing the inspection computer cares about is what your ECU knows and if thers no code then it doesnt know anything about the mods youve done to your car.  Conclusion: Youll pass as long as your check engine light is not on. (assuming you pass the visual inspection)

yeah, well it won't pass if the readyness monitors aren't ready, and if you think you can just reset your ECU or clear a code, you won't pass. I think I'd know a little bit more about the system than you guys  We don't need your backup on here.

Screamin', I have done nothing yet.  I waited for the warranty to expire.  Where can I learn about the readiness monitors and the electronic v. mechanical MIL fixes etc.  I have time I have not spent the $ yet.

Thanks

Not discounting what anyone said in this thread, but how I understand it is how SF said it.  If you perform the electrical CEL fix, the readyness monitors supposedly won't show up as ok and you'll fail the inspection.  To get around this a lot of people perform the mechanical fix which is 2 spark plug anti foulers screwed in somewhere (forget where hah)  They can be found in the HELP section of the auto store, you need a certain part number though that I can't remember off the top of my head.  you can search for it on NASIOC easily enough.  I don't know enough about the whole thing and I'm certainly not saying fastfreddy is wrong (how could I with my limited knowledge?  ahha)  but my opinion is that the spark plug anti foulers are like $4 or so, and for a measly $4 I think performing the mechanical CEL fix is worth it :)

The readiness monitors are built into the ecu there are a few different monitoring systems. engine, abs, tranny, evap, emissions are a few of them, it also checks to make sure all sensors are working properly. When you clear a code out of your car it resets the monitoring system. that is why you need to have a drive cycle(driving the car long enough for the ecu to see that everything is working properly in each system) NY state wants to tell you drive 50 miles to complete a drive cycle. but we have had 3 cars at the dealership where it said systems not ready and the car fails the inspection. then the car must be driven to see if the code(CEL) comes on. but it took 150 miles to get the emissions system to complete a drive cycle do to the fact it has been cold out and the ecu wanted to see that the cat warmed up properly. When we speak about electrical fix we are talking about placing a resistor in the line that goes from the oxygen sensor to the ecu so the ecu will get a signal that is within it preset threshold so it won't illuiminate the CEL. the ecu won't see the resistor only the signal. That is the same thing i do with my FTC-1 that i use to run my turbo on my NA ecu. it "tricks" the ecu by altering the signal that comes out of my FTC-1. my stock ECU would flip out if it saw 17PSI of boost but the FTC-1 lets the car see that it is reading 0 bar. a resistor in line does the same thing in away to help when you run exhaust mods to a vehicle. the mechanical fix is to move the oxygen sensor out of the flow of the exhaust by putting anti-fowler on the exhast pipe to move the oxygen sensor out. you may need to use more then one fowler to get the sensor far enough out of the flow to keep the check engine light off.

thanks for putting that in more intelligent terms

like I said I don't know much about it.  but I figure considering how little the anti foulers cost, doing the mechanical fix dont hurt anything  :P

Fred/Kyle, stop cheating and copying stuff off of your fancy Subaru website. Tell us what you really think :D

edit:
Don't read below if you don't want to see a rant.

[rant]
I think there has been enough of this "I know more than you" BS from everyone everywhere lately. It happens at work, it happens here, it happened at the concert I went to tonight...

People need to relax, calm down, let other people's answers suffice if they are 90% true, or if there is one simple word said, spelled, or spoken incorrectly and it doesn't affect the ultimate truth (whats that?) of the matter, let it go... things are much better.

IF someone asks you to be quiet at concert... don't act like you want to fight them! Sit back, be quiet... or move. Otherwise you get arrested and lose 120 dollars.

This isn't targeted at anyone, it spurred from a drunken couple nearly starting a fight at the TSO concert tonight

Thanks

edit within an edit:

Yes, I have been guilty of it too, and I realized how much of a douche that made me out to be.

Eric

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.
