My drill won't hold a bit big enough to drill out that back panel to clear the screw heads....so it's still sitting in pieces.

is it safe to try running it outside of the case if I hook the fans back up and lay it on a glass tabletop?  Just long enough to see if it's still giving the same error?

oooooookay......so, now I get the 3 light "RROD", nothing at all showing up on the TV

I only did the replacement of the bolts and the fresh thermal paste though, I didn't try to heat gun re-flow yet........I was a little scared of doing that, so was leaving it as a last resort  :|

You need to do the heat or it won't fix anything. You need to reseat the CPU and gpu

well, keeping in mind that that wasn't the original error, I wanted to wait and see.  I'm not keen on the idea of heating a whole section of board to hopefully only melt the right parts as a great solution with electronics, any way you look at it there has to be a risk to it.

but, yeah, now that there's not really anything to lose here, I'll give it a shot when I get some time to mess with it again

so then i decided......fuck it  :-D

stumbled across a deal I couldn't refuse on a "special edition" Final Fantasy XIII bundle pack.  Brand new (old style) 360 with a 250 gig hard drive, a copy of FFXIII that I can turn around and resell and 2 new controllers that I may sell off as well, not sure yet.

but now I can play my games and mess with the broken one later, and keep it around for linked play when friends are over if I get it working again
