Snow auto x?
« on: January 18, 2012, 11:23:24 PM »
Well, being relatively new still to Upstate NY and totally new to the world of AWD I am interested in testing the limits of my new WRX. Snowy parking lot excursions are always fun but are always accompanied by a constant worry of a ticket.  Are there any events around here like a snow auto x (or frozen lake ___) or something similar that I can sign up for?  I lived in Colorado a few years ago and there was a place in the mountains that did numerous events on a lake during the winter.  I can only image it's a blast and I want to do it!

+1 for wanting to learn the limits in a safe environment.

Now for someone who has an idea to chip in.

Unfortunately, no, not really.  I hear Lime Rock does winter AXs sometimes, but I don't think there's any scheduled.  The issue with anything planned is that, well, you can't plan weather.

As for worrying about tickets- I wouldn't.  As long as you find a open, clear lot, preferably with no business attached (or not open), you're not likely to get trouble.  I spent about 5 hours in CP last winter, much of it in the Target lot (since that's twice as big as the building).  Never had an issue.  Schools are another good place at night/weekends.  Also, the K-Mart lot is usually pretty empty on the far side.  (Lowes sent somebody out to ask us to leave though. :-P)  Basically, be smart about where you choose to experiment.

And yes, I saw many a  :police:, and they must have seen me.

As far as racing on lakes I believe they do hold some races on Caroga Lake. But I would not suggest taking your car there. From what I hear there are multiple cars racing at the same time. You are bound to swap paint on the ice.

There's at least one guy on here who is in the Ice Racing group.  Can't remember their name though, google 'upstate NY ice racing'.

There are ice races on Lake George during the winter carnival.

Kind of doubt there will be enough ice in time this year though.

Also, swapping paint is pretty much a given at these events.

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

AMEC, the local ice racing group, icerace.com, does not do timed solo car-type events. They have a street legal class on Blizzaks where bumping is discouraged, but still happens.

The local SCCA club attempted to sked a rallycross on ice last winter, which fell through (beforehand, figuratively, not literally) due to lack of freezing temps.

The Poughkeepsie car club puts on rallycross events during the summer; haven't heard about winter events.

I guess I'm too used to having Mechanicville-levels of security.  You know.  None.  Their parking lot is great, although the Mcville police will tell you to get lost, that's all they'll do.

AMEC, the local ice racing group, icerace.com, does not do timed solo car-type events. They have a street legal class on Blizzaks where bumping is discouraged, but still happens.

I didn't mention AMEC because of the multiple cars at once thing.  I've been to the summer AXs they put on at Malta, talked to guys who run the ice racing and yeah, there's damage.  I'd consider trying with my car, since it's pretty banged up already, but most of you guys have cars with nice exteriors.

*cough* One of our members works at the Washco fairgrounds in Greenwich.... They have a 100+ open acres for parking that I think could be used for rallycross during most of the year. It would require a sanctioned organization with insurance like the SCCA, though.

Which makes a snow-cross annoyingly moot.  Scheduling snow is about as doable as...  well, scheduling weather.

And yes I have already been out there doing donuts and sliding around all the parking posts...

And rally-x is banned... We had issues in the past with the one rally-x we hosted.

I however have contacts to more flat fields that would be great for rally-x. I'm just not an scca member so I can't set anything up.

Ner scca usually has a rally-x that sees snow, best to check their site, if you don't mind driving to NH or Vt

Yes, those events are cool but way too far away. Sometimes they are in VT but never far enough west.

I also have fields that I could potentially use, but I am NOT an organizer nor would it work unless they were frozen. They might also be a shade too bumpy.
