Car Audio Dealers around Albany?
« on: April 15, 2012, 01:17:22 PM »
I'm looking to add a sub to my '11 WRX hatch and I was curious if anyone could recommend a local shop where I might be able to listen to a few options before throwing down some cash.  If they also do installs that'd be another +1, but I can get by as long as the place has some demo's and won't push me around.

Thanks in advance!

********************************************* EDIT *********************************************
For those who arrived here by search, the forum has recommended Audio Obsessions as a good local shop that has a small demo room as well as tons of videos/pictures of their custom installs they have performed for prior customers.

Audio obsessions has got to be one of the best car audio install places around.  Adam the owner is a really great and upfront guys I've ever had the pleasure dealing with and he has some pretty good pricing for quality product it is not the entry level equipment this equipment will last you a long while

Audio obsessions is a great place. You will pay a bit more, but they know what they are doing. And I know a certain person on this forum who can do the install without a problem... "He" was the install manager at circuit city for about 5 years or so and knows his way around audio. And "he" has a few people on here who can vouch for "him".... just sayin.

I'm guessing klarowe is talking about himself...

There's also Jake (hookedontronics), if he is still interested in doing stuff. I've dealt with Jake on two occasions for installs, and seen his work on other cars. I would surely recommend Jake's work to anyone.

My recommendation for Jake is based solely on the fact I haven't had the chance to see klarowe's work; I'm sure he would do a great job as well.

No worries. Jake does amazing work as well. When it comes to stuff like this, always go with who you know will do a good job. That is the only way you will know something is done well.

Thanks for all the replies! I'm on Audio Obsessions website taking a look and might try to stop by sometime this week after work. The only manufacturer for mobile audio that i recognize is Alpine haha.  I guess I haven't self educated enough yet. Is JL Audio like the Bose is for home audio?

I'm looking to keep things small and removable as far as the sub are concerned (considering this http://www.jlaudio.com/cp108lg-w3v3-car-audio-microsub-subwoofer-systems-93133). Regarding the install it sounds like there's some guys with experience right here from the boards 8-). I think I'd be looking to throw the amp under the seat (for security) and then have the wiring nice and concealed.  If those with installation experience can point me in the direction of some folks they've done work for (and if the price is right ) then perhaps we can get together!

Thanks again everybody,

I have a sub box from JSEnclosures and he does great work. The attention to detail on the box alone speaks for his install abilities. I myself can also do it if he cannot (I don't want to take business from him... he was here first.. lol). Either way, your best option for install is either JSEnclosures, myself, or Audio Obsessions. A.O. may also be running a special with included or discounted install which may end up being your best bet anyways. When you go into AO, tell them Kenny sent you.

I would highly suggest Jake. We've done work on my car together. He does amazing work.

As for what Sub to go with. I do highly suggest JL. I've had my 12" JL W1 for 5+ years. I've played everything from Hip Hop/Rap to Electronica. And even through the years of me having the shit hit as hard as possible (it's a phase I think everyone goes through haha) it still is like brand new. Just make sure you buy an amp that will support it.

I would also make sure you have the speakers to complement the lows. Good mids and highs are very important. You don't want to be that guy with bone rattling lows and everything else just distorted. For speakers I still highly suggest JL. If you want to save some money though, Memphis is a great brand. I have Memphis M-Class in my front and rear. Great sound for money. They're more expensive than Alpine but not crazy expensive. If money is no object I suggest Diamond Audio or JL though.

Lastly if you want to check out a good shop hit up Electronics Warehouse on West Ave in Saratoga. I know the owners. Very reputable dealer. They sell mainly Memphis and JL though. And if you want them to do an install go to their Glens Falls location. A buddy of mine does installs there. Amazing work.

Search online. See what you want to get. Personally that W3 would probably be very good. I didn't see what size it is. But I would go with 8" or 10". 12" is just overkill unless you really blast your music.

Pick up the stuff at a local reputable dealer. And see if Jake can help you do an install.

I highly recommend Tsunami wiring. Their product is awesome. And you might want to consider Dynamat in your trunk to take care of the rattles.

I agree with Tyler. Kicker also has some very good subs for the money. The CompVR is a very decent middle line sub that has very clean sound output. And if you want a little more, the L5 is another great sub (square sub). As far as mids/highs, you can get the Polk Audio DB series components for around $100/pair on Amazon which is an amazing deal. I am a huge fan of Polk speakers... the sound output is amazing for the price. Right now I have 2 sets of Polk components, a Kicker L5 12" sub, all running off a Kicker 700.5 5 channel amp and although it may not win SPL or SQL competitions, it is more than enough for everyday driving. I usually keep the sub at maybe +1 on the deck, and about 3/4 gain on the amp (matched to the output of the deck) and it provides a great amount of bass that isn't overpowering for the speakers. Its all around a great setup for a decent price.

Here is what i make for the hatch.  It's a hidden sub that goes inside your spare tire (Yes, you still keep your spare tire!), located under the floor.  It fits a slim sub.  I can do other enclosures but this one is very popular

Wow that looks like a really great option.  How much do you charge for that solution (PM me if you'd like)?  Also does a JL W3v3 fit? Or an easier way to ask I guess is what have you installed that fits? I only need an 8", or a 10" tops I think. I'm not looking to blast out any windows :)

That is an awesome idea for an enclosure. Out of curiosity, whats the rough airspace inside that box?

Through PM Jake recommended the Elemental designs SQ10 for his enclosure if you're on a budget.  I have a hard time understanding how such a compact sub can hit hard, but I'll just believe it off other peoples experiences I guess.  :-D

I stopped in to Audio Obessions today after work and spoke to Mark.  He showed me the pictures and videos of the '09 STi custom box install they did for a customer also looking to conserve space:
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/29281_132363006776660_117920001554294_356311_3333309_n.jpg

It looks great, very professional, but it was wayyyyy out of my budget, and IMO still quite a large solution. Mark didn't mention any specials either, so as of now they are on the back burner.

I dropped your name Kenny and they acknowledged you as a regular, said you were a good guy and the likes.  Thanks all for the recommendation to check them out.  Overall I had a pleasant experience with them.

Yes, they tend to be on the higher side of the budget, but the quality work they do is worth every penny they charge (IMO).

On the products side of things, I just finished a conversation with an Elemental Designs sales rep from their website.  The SQ10 is back ordered and they do not know if it will return for future ordering.  I asked if they could recommend a good alternative since I am looking for a slim sub and I was surprised they referred me to a different manufacturer and website entirely:
Quote
Sales Department: Im sorry Chris. With that item we are not sure if it will return at this time.
Chris B.: Okay, can you recommend a good alternative? I have a very small area to work with and that is why I was drawn to the SQ10 because it was a very slim design.
Sales Department: The Tang Band neo 10" is a good alternative
Chris B.: forgive me, but I am having trouble finding that item. Can you provide a link?
Sales Department: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=264-862
Chris B.: Thank you

Anyone have any experiences with this sub? Or any other low cost slim sub that would be comparable to the SQ10? If not I'll have to really start saving up for either the Alpine slim Type-R or the slim JL (both of which are really too much $$ for me right now).

EDIT: I should probably start a build thread or something.. I'm realizing I've derailed the thread from it's original topic

Save your money and get a JL. It's worth it. You can always just put it in a regular sealed box until you have cash for a custom enclosure.

And I can't stress enough the importance of a quality amp and wiring.

I have difficulty justifying the purchase of the $600 JL sub needed for these slim enclosures (http://www.jlaudio.com/product_list/54216.49892.48020.0.0/TW5) when the custom enclosure is less than or equal to that same price. Looking at it from a different direction, I could go with a JL microsub, some velcro, and an MRP-M500 for about the same price as it'd cost for that slim TW5 series.  It wouldn't be as pretty but it'd get the job done for significantly less money.  If the W1v2 fit I would definitely consider it, however I don't think there's enough space for Jake's enclosure.

The Alpine Type-R slims are also in the $500's so I'm thinking I'll either have to find something used, or that Tang Band WT-1427G the rep sent me, or maybe one of the Pioneer Shallow Mounts for $150-$250 range.

what is the max depth for jake's box? I would look into the kicker comp subs. Depending on which one you get, they are actually fairly slim.

Edit: Sub problem solved: http://www.amazon.com/Kicker-10CVT104-CompVT-Shallow-Subwoofer/dp/B0036MQWN8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1334686307&sr=8-3
The Comp subs provide a very decent sound output. Their shallow mount subs run from a 6.5" to a 12" sub depending on what you need... and you can get them in just about any ohm rating (1,2,4).

That's great to hear. I've just decided to go with Jake for the trunk enclosure. Given the depth constraints and my wallet constraints, I'm looking at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001NFA3X0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=A2NYACAJP9I1IY.  I figure I can pair it with an Alpine MRP-M500 and I should be well on my way.
