gear oil question
« on: November 04, 2013, 02:27:13 PM »
I used to use Mobil 1 in the old outback, and I'm overdue on a change in the 'eye'.  I looked in a couple spots for 75-90 Mobil 1, but all I'm seeing is 'LS'  -for a limited slip..  I double checked on Mobil's web site, I don't see any that isn't 'LS'  They imply on their web site that it's ok in open diffs, but has anyone used this ?

I asked this question to fast freddy and he suggested oem subaru extra s.

Just like a oil filter oem is a good choice

He can get the Subaru gear oil cheaper than any vendor too

LSD gear oil isn't really bad for open diffs.  It's using non-LSD oil in LSD's that can result in problems.  If you can grab the Subaru Extra-S gear oil, I say go for it.  I'm using LucasOil 75w90 in my wagon right now, since I really didn't have time to get the Extra-S from Fred when my trans gave up the ghost.  I'm using the same in the rear diff and am having no issues with either.

Extra S is definitely some magic stuff. Only thing I'd go with.

Unfortunately the Legacy is a slushbox, so the front will see Mobil as well (in the diffs, not the trans). It's a pita to get to a dealer for things, I might get to one once a year.  I did the trans fluid last year, and totally forgot about the diffs when I was last at a dealer (and should have got extra-s, and more oil filters)  I'm in some sort of wasteland here, between dealers.

I don't think most dealers carry extra-S anyway.
