Angry humming noise
« on: April 29, 2014, 12:31:48 PM »
Legacy is making an angry humming noise at speeds >35 and the wheel is not perfectly straight.  If I turn the wheel ever so slightly ether way it groans.   Power steering fluid is slightly below hot minimum.   Car was kinda warmed up when I checked it..   Steering does not seem firm nor does it groan when car is not moving and I turn the wheel

What else should I be checking.

2.5 n/a. 4eat.  55k miles

wheel bearings.

Also if the fluid is below hot minimum you probably need to add fluid, but I don't think this is related.

My friend's Legacy Outback did the same thing, groan on turning the wheel. It turned out to be a loose/worn belt.  I've heard worn belts squeel before, but not groan. Weird, but it's easy enough to add to the checklist.

wheel bearings.

When the wheel bearing went on my toyota it was more of a thump thump thump when turning certain directions... This sounds more like a motor struggling, light grinding.  Weird because it when i turn the wheel slightly right it is more of a hum,  where left is more of an angry groan.   Its hard to pin point the exact location, but when i go right it seems more to the right, and left, more to the left.
Also, really big bends / high speed on-ramps don't seem to produce any noise.  Only small changes like a bend on a highway.

I'll start with the fluid and check the belts,  I just hope its power steering related and not differential/tranny related

I've heard the thump before, but when my Subaru had a bad bearing, it made the exact thing you're describing. Not saying it 100%, but definitely check it out.
