Autocross Tires

Looking for some advice on auto-x tires. Without paying too much attention to price, what would be the best street tires? I'll ask for Dave's help in this since I know he has some insight but I also need to have more information on what the rules will be next year for street tires.
Whoever smelt it dealt it.

This article, and the 2014 rulebook seems to speak specifically to the new 'street' category formerly known as 'stock' classes. Everyone I've spoken to is under the impression that they apply to basically all classes with 'street' in the name, if you want to be considered as being on 'street tires'.  The main thing I look for is the tread having larger-area 'blocks' rather than tons of sipes everywhere, with tiny tread blocks.  Many of the tier-1 performance tires run slightly wider than their measurements suggest, but Sumitomo and Fuzion run narrower than their measurements, because they're cheap and cut corners.

1.   Effective 1/1/14 – Minimum UTQG tread wear rating of 140
2.   Effective 1/1/15 – Minimum UTQG tread wear rating of 200
3.   Molded tread depth of 7/32” or greater as specified by the manufacturer
4.   Listed in a current year of prior two years of the “Tire Guide” and/or “Tread Design Guide”
5.   Department of Transportation (DOT) approved

What size tires are you looking for?  Not all tires are available in every size.

Devin and Myself use the Nitto NT05 in 235-40-17, with a treadwear rating of exactly 200, and they were $142 a tire when I bought them last year.  There was nothing else within $25/tire that had the 200 treadwear, and a tread design that looked like it would hold up to autocross.  Some other tires in the same or higher performance class, with a 200 treadwear are:
Dunlop Direzza ZII
Falken Azenis RT615k
Bridgestone Potenza RE11
BFG G-Force Rival
Kumho Ecsta XS(180 treadwear but they might have a new version out with a 200 wear rating.)

Always, Always, Always cross-shop TireRack and DiscountTireDirect.  For one thing, TR didn't carry Nitto or Falken when I was last shopping.  This little schpiel is my no means a total breakdown of performance tires, but should get the discussion started.

What about these upcoming "rule changes" for tires in street classes? I currently sit on 275-35-18 and 245-40-18.

Id give the Federal 595SS a look, tread wear rating is 240, unless i read something wrong. lol.

Only place online to really get them however is online tires.com, which can be a pain.

Federal 595ss are not even in the same league as the tires Dave listed. They are great for burning up on a drift car but I've been less than satisfied with them on my street car. There is a Federal 595 RSR that is similar to the other "autocross" tires but I really haven't heard any feedback on how they are. I've been happy with Azenis RT615s in the past and am super happy with the ZIIs on the front end of the drift car.

Eh...i have them on my STi and ive been happy with them so far. I had the RS-R's on order, but were backordered...ended up just getting the SS's since they were in stock...

I thought i saw a article about them changing street tire class to a 200+ wear rating. Anything below a 200 is the next class up.

The rule change that I posted in my quote?   :angel:  Rule #2 is the only change for next year.  I also added another tire to the list.

I'll also take this chance to say that tire wear ratings are unregulated.  Manufactures can and will arbitrarily assign numbers.

Just read the actual rulebook again, the '200 treadwear' rule is for all 'street tires' in all street classes.  Not just the classes formerly known as stock.

I think I am going with the Dunlop Direzza ZII.

Stock(street) classes may be either unlimited tire width or limited to the ST widths. 

Tire Widths for Street Touring Classes:

14.3 TIRES
Tires must meet the eligibility requirements of the Street category with
the following additional restrictions:
Tires shall have a section width up to and including the following:
STF, STC, STS, STR (AWD) – 225 mm
STX (AWD), STU (AWD) – 245 mm
STR (2WD) – 255 mm
STX (2WD) – 265 mm
STU (2WD) – 285 mm
The M Coupe is not allowed in any of the ST classes, and from B-Street(stock), it goes to BSP(modifications).  The "street(formerly stock)" classes now seem to have some allowance for wheel changes too.

Any type wheel may be used provided it complies with the following:
A. It is the same width as standard and as installed it does not have an
offset more than ±¼” (±6.35mm) from a standard wheel for the car.
The resultant change in track dimensions is allowed.

Tire Widths for Street Prepared Classes:

I interpret this as tire widths are either only restricted by clearance/safety, or they follow the same rules as ST classes.

Basically I think that his M-Coupay will be fine with 200 treadwear tires that are the same sizes he has now.

Pretty sure his windshield modifications are putting him outside of BStock. The weight savings from the lack of adhesive is often overlooked.

this is all good news. I was already looking at the direzzas. Nelson ran them at the autox and had nothing but good things to say about them. Also took a pretty crazy time with them. I think my mind is made.
Pretty sure his windshield modifications are putting him outside of BStock. The weight savings from the lack of adhesive is often overlooked.

They're a good tire, and if they worked on nelson's car they'll work on yours.

You don't throw something with long legs and what seemed to be an attractive face in my car seconds before I am supposed to begin driving around a course for the first time.
Should I show off? Should I drive slow? wow, those are long legs!...Ummm how did I end up back at the start?

These plus the new shocks will be interesting.

Checked in with EJ and looks like McCarty OGS is all we have on deck (5 events so far).

These plus the new shocks will be interesting.

You're coming from those crazy michelin supercar tires, right?  My guess is that these will have a little less absolute grip, but when combined with your new shocks, I'd gamble your car will actually be faster.  Think you'll be able to keep up with the 100 screaming mazda hamsters?   :wink:

My last set were pilot super sports which are a great road grand touring tire but not good for autocross at all.
I am hopeful the star specs will make a huge improvement.
