gauge lighting

I tried putting in my Omori gauges so they dim but as soon as I hook up the constant 12V the lights came on and I didn't even need the ground connected.  I tried to connect the ground to the varying signal, but it did not matter.  I used the stock boost guage lighting plug (has a constant 12V and the varying ground line).  I had a maze of wires in there with the wideband and both gauges going in at the same time.

i taped into the purple or lavender color wire in the back of the radio you can cut strip and splice it like nothing it comes on only when the lights do but no dimming.  then grounded under the steering column to a bolt.
