Downsizing question
« on: November 24, 2014, 12:50:28 PM »
Hey guys,
Quick question (and yes, I've searched and searched).  My wife has a 2015 forester premium with stock 225/60/17 tires on it.  I've got a set 16 inch wheels with 215/65/16 winter tires in them.  The wheels fit fine (just clear the brakes), but I'm concerned about the overall diameter difference (somewhere around -2.2%).  I know the speedo/odo will be slightly off, but am I being neurotic?  Will it hurt/damage anything?  The winter setup is nearly new tires on my wrx rims...I'd just as soon not buy new winters gain!  Any relevant input is appreciated. Thanks

as long as the wheels fit over anything, I wouldn't worry at all over a 2% tire size difference

As long as all tires and wheels the same I dony think it will hurt anything.  Speedo will be alittle fast depending on diameter change. You should be fine just My 2 cents

I have always run different sized tires on cars. Never smaller, but bigger, up to over 10% difference.

It will be fine as long as the wheels clear the brakes. In fact, slightly skinnier tires are better in the snow.

Lots of info here:

When I got my spare wheels with snows , I used a calculator that compared the overall size of the different tires. Damned if I can find it.

There's a bunch out there, unfortunately the best one I ever saw doesn't exist anymore.  It was a combo for wheel and tire diameter, plus offset and even brake clearance if you had enough measurements taken off your car

Anyway, this one is good for tire size calculations: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tirecalc.php?tires=225-60r17-215-65r16
Or this one if you want to just punch in your tire size and get a list of what other sizes are close: http://tire-size-conversion.com/tire-size-calculator/
(The second one does all the other functions that the first does too, but I just don't like the feel of the tool or the "visualizer" personally)
