2011 WRX - Recommendation for brakes?
« on: April 01, 2015, 03:43:44 PM »
Got the car inspected at Mavis today and they said the brakes (rear) were about shot.  They gave me a quote for new pads and two new rotors but before I consider just extending the status quo, I figured I'd ask around to see what people recommended and see if I should spend the money to take things up a notch.

It's a 2011 WRX hatch and it's on the OEM brakes from when the car was new.  All recommendations are welcome.

Going to Mavis will be bringing things Down a notch. Your stock rotors/pads are of bettter quality then anything Mavis will put on. And i highly doubt that your rears are shot and the fronts are fine. Front breaks almost always wear out before the rears. I would have one of us check them for you.
There are lots options for you to consider from OE-like replacement to spine crushing stopage. Depends on what you want, driving style and what you plan to do. I use Napa's Premium rotors and have been very happy with them, (on the truck too) and they are dirt cheap compared to another companys equivelant. I used Hawk ceramic pads on the street and they were quiet, lasted a good long time and stopped well. I use Hawk HP+ for racing and they are loud as hell, dusty as a bastard but shred speed like a mofo!  Your pad decision is endless, no pun intended, but you cant go wrong with napy's rotors!

This is my DD; my one and only car.  I drive a bit hard so I definitely like good stopping power that does not fade (these are brakes after all), but not at too great a cost of dust and sound. I've never had the car on the track nor do I expect I will unless I hit it big and this car becomes a toy instead of a DD. :!:

On a scale of 0-10 (OE-like replacement being 0 & spine crushing stoppage being 10), I guess I'm looking somewhere between 2 & 4.

Hope that helps. Thanks!

Anyone have experience with Stoptech? I've had my eye on this for a while. Brakes will need to be changed soon:

I suggest HPS pads, and whatever rotor you prefer. Napa rotors work. I haven't heard much bad about Stoptech.

Also, I would not trust a Mavis monkey to do your brakes. Fred or myself can do them for a reasonable rate, if you need someone to do them.

Cheers cheers!

My buddy also mentioned the HPS so it seems like they are something I should look at.  I'll take another look at rotors and then try to put an order together.

If anyone has a reputable shop that installs brakes, let me know!  (and keep an eye on your inbox Pitcrew)

HPS pads are good for street and autocross use.  They do dust moderately (but less than the HP+ or more racey pads).

The stoptech kit looks good, and I'd trust the parts, but slotted rotors are going to generate noise, dust, and reduce pad life on a DD.  I typically get the mid-grade napa blank rotors for my cars, excepting the BBK on the front of my wagon right now.

Generic blank rotors (e.g., Centric)
Pad of your choice (if you're going with just street-duty, something like the Centric/Stoptech Posi-Quiets are fine, the upgraded Stoptech street pads are also good, but can be dusty)
Fluid
Master Cylinder Brace

You can do SS lines, but I would do the above mentioned first.
