steam os
« on: December 05, 2015, 07:22:44 AM »
Ive been looking at steam machines because my desktop is out of date and cant play anything newer than skyrim... and that was only on mid quality. also my copy of windows died last so i havent even turned it on since then.

and after deciding i lack the funding, i figured id try installing this free OS .. debian linux based that says its designed for the living rooom.

Its quite a bit to download as i get an average of 1mBs out here in the sticks, so if its not worth my time to download chime in now, i do have a vista recovery disk and win 7 upgrade, i could potentially get it all going again, with windows, but all i do on it is play steam,i have a laptop for "windows" stuff

I think it'd be worth a shot, honestly.  I'm not hugely in the loop, but at minimum it'll at least let you play your games.  Best-case you can play them at slightly higher settings.

Since its Linux-based, a large majority of Steam games will not play on it... unless they've done something magical with this linux-based distribution. Which I'd put money on that they havent.

Also Windows licenses don't die.. Unless you were using a jacked volume license that got disabled. Why don't you just reformat and reinstall windows? If its a rig dedicated to gaming you're not going to do better on any linux platform. It's always more of a headache than it's worth.

... they are selling it commercially... how can not all steam games play on it?

if i had the 800$ since i want to upgrade anyways, i would just buy the i7 steam machine

and yes my windows licence was jacked and now it wont log in anymore...

I've been sick with the flu all weekend, so bad that i didnt even feel like attempting to install this. I did however download the first 1.5 gig "installer"

well plan is, try installing this, see how it is, if it doesnt work (play the 9 games i have on steam), just gonna buy a new motherboard chip and ram, and a copy of windows...

my current setup is a

Yeah... Linux is good for a lot of things. I've come to respect it more at work. However if your goal is gaming its an absolute waste of time. You'd be better off spending the money to get a copy of windows home. Or finding an old XP volume key.. I don't know what version of windows you were running.

I'd say upgrade that thing. I really want to upgrade my gaming rig but I just can't justify it at the moment. Everything I play still autodetects ultra-high. I could tell myself I need to build a new rig for Elite Dangerously and an Oculus, but the truth there is I only sort of lack specs via my processor. The rest of my rig is still well beyond the needs. :(

Im reading more and more into it, steam seems to have done to give themselves a second platform to move onto, if say microsoft decides to become dicks to them (competition)... also there are words of Halflife 3 possibly being a Steam OS exclusive.

its just a question if everything fellthrough, would the big companies like bethesda stay with steam and go linux, or side with microsoft stay on windows.

Though.. if microsoft never makes a move to be a dick, then there will never be any linux support...

Yep, just going to stick with windows for now... amazing.. i just plugged this old beast in and turned it on, and it actuallly loaded and logged in. lol a year ago, it wouldnt log on because of authenticaion issues..

the machine came with Vista and i quickly upgraded it to 7, but it was not a "legit" copy i got from ebay for 10$ ... could it hurt to try the free 10 uprade?

Yes. Every desktop I use is a Linux machine. Even at work I am 50% Linux/Unix admin (including in an HPC environment.)

But skip it for gaming.

No major studio can afford to walk away from Microsoft, you lose the entire XBox community. And that's just a foolish proposition. If Valve decides to throw down that gauntlet and become exclusive and turn down studios like Bethesda Steam will drop in popularity in a major way.

I can absolutely see Valve choosing to be exclusive with Half-Life (I feel like its a mistake, since they're saying no to their primary market, which was PC Gamers. We made Valve what it is).

My work desktop is windows, but all of the servers I actually work with at work, as well as my backups servers are all Linux. AIX can go to hell, but Linux rocks sauce. But those are strict CLI situations. I really enjoyed my iMac before it died, OSX does a great job of making Linux super accessible.

I did spin up a linux box at home on 13yr old hardware, but I don't do anything with it.

Lol... Well, this OS question originated from me wanting to play fallout 4... I've always played elder scrolls and fallout on pc.

Now that I really read into system requirements I DO have to upgrade everything... Lol fuck that, I barely use the thing for anything else... It can play the games I have, no need to make it better.

So let me ask this simpler question. Anyone notice any crashing/glitching on fallout 4 ps4/Xbox one?

I'm probably going to buy it for Xbox one as that's my solo time system, ps4 is my social system on which I am constantly getting invites to chat parties and games... Very distracting..

I asked some friends that have put some serious hours into Fallout 4 on PS4
no issues so far.

I can't speak for the consoles. I'm 130+ hours on PC, it's crashed on me a couple times, but I've never lost major progress or had corrupted saves.
