Emission and inspection help?!
« on: February 08, 2016, 12:21:01 PM »
So i'm moving from Florida in about a month and have a few questions. So down here in Florida we don't have any emissions tests or inspections. I recently did a muffler delete on my 09 legacy and was wondering if i needed to put them on again when i move up. Also, how does the inspection process go? Thanks in advance everyone.

Welcome...Dew? Ill call you Dew.

Inspection here is pretty simple. The inspection place is suppose to remove a front wheel to check brake pad thickness, and ball joints/tie rods for play. They check the horn, turn signals, and make sure rear taillights are working. Then they hook up a OBD reader to scan the car for any codes, as long as there is no codes, your car will pass. I could be missing something, NYS DMV has a site with everything they are suppose to check if you'd like to check that out as well.

If they're going by the book, yes, you can fail for any modifications to the exhaust system that are intended to make it louder. You can be ticketed for it as well

Go to a chain near closing time on a Friday, they may rush it through. If not, i believe you get a certain amount of time to fix it and bring it back without paying again... Someone correct me if I'm wrong

Ok. Technically, the car will still be under Fl registration until November of this year I think. Maybe that can buy me some time to figure out what exhaust I want to run that will still be legal enough.

As long as you have Catalytic converters-even fake ones, you should be fine at any quick change oil place if they even look for them. That would be the only real exhaust concern. Having muffler deletes, i wouldn't worry about a thing.

As soon as you get NYS plates/reg, you have 10 days to get it inspected.  I agree that most quicklube type places won't hassle you for mufflers.

Hoffmann Jiffy-Lubes ;) if you'd like a name, they don't own a lift in any of their stores, they just jack up the drivers front check that brake, and throw a sticker on the car, as long as it passes the OBD tests... (Worst they will do is try to sell you an oil change and air filter)

I had a legacy with 237,000 miles on it... Needed brakes bad... Exhaust after the cat was completely missing... So I just did the left front and went there and it passed... A month later the strut mount separated from the frame due to the amount of rust. As an inspector myself... I would have NEVER passed that car :-P

Also.. You can still pay the 21$ to get inspected BEFORE transferring your plates... I would recommend doing this just for the peace of mind that your car passes inspection... IF not, you have a larger timeframe to get it fixed. (10 days isn't really enough when you order parts off the internet)

If they're just muffler deletes you should likely be fine inspection wise. Police may pay attention to you depending on the noise.

Inspection locations get antsy when you start removing catalytic converters. Technically I think they're supposed to do a visual, but most shops don't. If you have a gutted cat, or an after market high-flow cat (or obviously a stock cat) you should be perfectly fine. That's just from my personal experience.
