Air Ratchet
« on: April 04, 2016, 05:15:50 PM »
I am looking for an Air Ratchet suggestion.  I finally have an air compressor,  albeit not a big one, but I have one.    Doing brakes on the legacy this weekend sucked because the upper rear caliper bolts in a position where its really hard to get anything with length on it to turn....

Does anyone have any recommendations?  Should I just walk into harbor freight and grab a cheap 3/8s one?   I have never bought one before but I see different ones are rated for different torques..  Mainly looking to have one handy for breaking stubborn bolts loose.

Never used one myself, but for breaking stubborn bolts with a breaker bar i would go 1/2", I've snapped 3/8"
Don't know if that's as big of a concern with an impact, just a thought though

I always thought air ratchets were considerably lower torque than impacts.  If the torque isn't very high (like under 100 ft/lbs), 3/8 would probably give better clearance in a tight spot.

On a slightly different note, do we have a thread with busted tools ?

Der. I don't know where I got impact from the original post.....except that that's what I'd be looking at if breaking things loose was my main concern

There was a broken car parts thread, but i don't remember a broken tool tread

This was the problem I ran into with the legacy.   I had my 1/2 ratchet out but there was no room to swing it around.  Then again,  I never had a proper breaker bar.   Maybe loosing the little bit of flex you have in the ratcheting head is all I would really need.

It's sometimes a no win situation. I've broken ratcheting wrenches that way, but never snapped a bolt with one.
I've never broken a breaker bar, even with an extension on it, but i have snapped of bolt heads that way, and even broken sockets.

Nice thing about the breaker bar is you can sometimes angle it past 90 degrees, so you can get yourself outside the wheel well, depending on the bar.

Either way, hopefully you've been soaking it with PB Blaster this whole time while you've been looking at tool options

The air ratchets look like they top out around 70 ft/lbs.  You could get a 3/8 impact that's fairly small with 3x that torque.

I'd vote for the breaker bar.

If you dont have a issue buying from tool shed in schenectady, I got a IR impact there for I think 125.00  air ratchects just let you turn the bolt or nut off faster. Use impact sockets you dont need a shiney silver one exploding.
