My GF just got the new guide at work.  Now every inspection shop needs to have a tint-measuring-device.  I hope they can write it off their taxes.

I just want to point out that the legislation's main sponsor is from Syracuse--Sen. John DeFrancisco.  CNY, way to kill the fun.  Someone should throw a clear paperweight at him.

If it's tinted, maybe he won't see it coming ...

With all the hype about it online the last couple months, I am expecting more enforcement of it by the cops too.  Historically its always been something they nailed you with if you are a dick.

Tinted windows are an equipment violation.

Window tint laws are not enforced equally.

Example: SUVS, vans, school busses and many other vehicles have tinted windows as original equipment.
Police cars are allowed to have zero percent transmittable light

What is soo bad about tint?
Safety
from an operational perspective, tinted glass allows less transmittable light thru and when there is less light available (night time) it can be more difficult to see.

AND this tale of a policeman who was shot by a man in a stopped car with tinted windows.

Presumably the fed doesn't consider this a national concern or it would not allow each state to have its own laws.

cliffs: safety is important and every death is a tragedy however I can not see this as anything other than bullshit legislature that costs we the people more than the service and value it adds.

Agreed.  I'm going to have to strip the rear passenger windows on my car, though I may re-tint within the limit.  It's worth a second look, but I believe at least that "Fixed Glass" is exempted from this.  Of course an opaque vinyl wrap on windows a-la-panel-van might also be exempt.

...As are all jeep wranglers!  Just bring in your jeep with no doors and no top on it for inspection.

I mean, NYS still calls it "NYS Vehicle Safety Inspection" and it sort of...isn't anymore.  I'm surprised an unscrupulous lawyer hasn't sued the state for the language/title of the "service" being inaccurate.

I look at it like this:

If it were my 'job' to create tint law, I'd have to come up with a proposal, and project charter, and present this to a board...I'd have to show them a legit business reason or the board would never approve funding.  Funding includes the time I spent creating the law and proposal etc.

Question: So how do you quantify how much 'safer' NY is with 2-3 less tinted windows per car?

This isn't as obvious and universally accepted/tolerated as  'speed limits' for which we have a dedicated highway traffic department and decades of data that can be used to support laws.

Answer: you don't quantify it bc you can't.

If you can't quantify it, How much of a 'problem' is tinted windows?  How much of a problem is it versus the cost to implement the law?  Who benefits from this change in law?  Where does the money earned from window tint violations go?

It really feels like over-reaching, government finding new revenue streams under the guise of safety and protection.

As long as someone 'feels' safer, that's enough. Sadly, there are many examples.

I don't see why I can't tint my car as much as my Wife's van.  I'm just as dangerous (ha ha) in either vehicle.

I have the Subaru visors on my windows.  I suppose if I wanted to, I could tint the window below the level of the visor, since the testing equipment wouldn't be able to reach that point.   :-D

I only have 2 windows, as far as i know to "de-tint" on the wagon.  It sucks sooo much to remove though.  Maybe i should convert it to a 'panel wagon'.

Someone needs to make an affordable lcd tint.  Throw a switch, it's dark.  Throw it back, it's off.  Hide the switch, and ask, what tint ?

Mercedes has it in some of their glass-panel roofs.  They call it "Magic Sky Control".  The transparency/opacity is adjustable.

Those tint removal kits work really well, however, I've only used them on side windows.  spray on the remover and pull, scrape.  I used a blow dryer on the opposite side of window to warm up glass but probably not necessary.

The instructions say something like, 'cover the window with a bag after spraying removal on it, iirc..'  I didn't do that for the side windows but I try it on the rear glass bc embedded defroster.

With all of the other stuff they have to deal with in NY, making an inspection shop check tint should be at the bottom of the list.  My car came tinted from when I bought it down in VA, so Im not sure what it is, but its probably too dark for NYS.  Any local shops running a special on removal and re-tint with whats legal?

I do most of my driving after the sun goes down so I've never invested in tints.  Sucks for everyone who isn't driving a fishbowl like me though.  :(

I was going to tint the mazda, lightly, but now I won't bother.  Saved some money for an ECU Reflash, I suppose.

Just another way for the state to reach into your wallet and take your hard earned money.      If Something is against the law  , then it should be against the law, now allow law enforcers to have tinted windows, or politicians.. ect.   No one really cares what your car looks like but you anyways... LOL
