Help requested - smoke coming from under hood
« on: January 28, 2017, 02:36:46 PM »
Hey guys!

Looking for some help here. Recently my 04 WRX has been having some minor smoke issues, and also smelling of exhaust fumes. She has 130K miles on her now, and is no longer my daily driver. I'll do my best to describe everything I'm seeing and hearing as far as symptoms go.

It started a couple months ago. I had just started to drive it to work, when at a red light about 5 minutes later I had noticed a relatively small amount of smoke coming out of the hood, accompanied by exhaust fumes. I worked from home that day until I could take a closer look at it. Later on I took it for a cruise and it stopped smoking, but still had some exhaust smell. I drove to work the rest of the week without issue aside from the smell.

Fastforward to present day and it's once again its smoking from under the hood. The smoke looks white/greyish It was from the lower up pipe/manifold region, so I figured it might be a gasket. I replaced all the gaskets on the pass. side exhaust manifold, but that didn't work.

It now looks like its coming from the crossover pipe up front. I've also noticed some of the gaskets occasionally drip very slightly with gas or some other liquid. Smells like its running very rich. Coolant levels are fine, performance seems normal, and I haven't noticed any new noises

I've only been driving it a couple times a month. Would old gas have an effect?

Here's a video I took that shows smoke coming from the crossover pipe: https://youtu.be/X2NG5VEenus

Please let me know if you guys have had a similar experience. All help is appreciated. Thanks guys!

Check above it. Most likely an oil leak that drops down on the pipe and burns off.  I've opened my own Subaru repair shop and would gladly get to the bottom of it for you.  There is a number of potential seals that could be the cause since the timing cover is directly above that spot so it maybe from there

Hey Fred, thanks for the input. If I wasn't living in Tennessee now, I would gladly bring her in!

I'll definitely check again for an oil leak. I didn't see anything initially, but maybe I missed something. It also seems to produce more smoke if I rev the engine up.

Btw, that was me that called you last week because my up pipe wasn't matching up properly with the manifold. Turns out it was the weight of the exhaust bending it to that position, and the easiest thing to do was actually jack up the downpipe gradually, which would position the up pipe back into place.

Actually Fred, I wiped down that crossover pipe pretty well tonight and didn't see any smoke coming from there again. Guess that was it, thanks!

However now it looked like smoke was coming from the up pipe due to a little oil dripping on it. Possibly time for new valve cover gasket?
