PSA - re: Time warner/Spectrum
« on: May 15, 2017, 12:00:14 AM »
Just a heads up, if you have Internet through these guys and haven't called them since the merger, do it. It may be common sense to some, but I'm ashamed to say i didn't think about it earlier myself, and I'm sure many people will never think to do it.

I was paying  a premium for the "turbo" Internet (30mb/sec) package, their new basic speed is 60mb/sec, but they don't update your current service unless you request it.

The Internet portion of my bill just dropped by roughly $30/mo, while the downstream speed doubled.
Just ran a speed test on my phone through wifi and got:
70.40 mbps down
7.31 mbps up
37ms ping

(dropped my cable tv too, since I haven't used that in like 6 months. Not really relevant, but all in all I just lowered my whole bill by about $135/mo :-))

Happy to help

Yeah, it's kinda shitty from the consumers perspective, but thinking about it from their side... I kinda get it. They're gonna lose a bundle from everyone who was paying for turbo, and i imagine that's a good portion of their customer base... between the gamers, the streamers, the downloaders, the work at homes, and all the gullibles they upsold to needlessly.... They probably need to drop like 60% of their Internet sales by about 30%. That's a big hit to the bottom line immediately after a merger.

What were you paying for internet? Or were you always bundled?

I made the call a couple months ago and my bill stayed the same (they told me I didn't qualify for the new $30/mo 60mpbs rate). So I'm still paying like $60ish/mo for internet, but I've got 60mpbs instead of my old 30mpbs.

I was paying something ridiculous....the more I look at it, the less I get the overall amount.  But it was basically this:
Tv services : 91.99
Internet services : 74.03
(standard Internet 54.03, extreme upgrade 20.00)
Other taxes and fees and cable box rental : 14.50

I didn't qualify for that $30 introductory rate either, but with having my own modem and router, she quoted me a final price of $45.31/mo, all taxes and stuff included, for the basic Internet package (60mbps)

(side note, I had just paid my bill too, at the higher rate, so now I have a credit and will have 3 months with no payments lol )

Thanks for the heads up! I'm doing this right now. I JUST got them to stop charging me for a modem lease when I've had my own modem since day 1. $80 in credit. I love how they don't really advertise that their new base speed is way higher. I only have the Turbo upgrade now, which is like 30MBps and I still have shit speed at night. I drop down to like 2-3MBps Down and .3 Up after about 9:30pm.

Maybe this will help. Thanks!

Instead of lowering my cost, they try to make me think they were doing me a huge favor by giving me every channel available for just slightly  less than I was paying and twice the net speed.  My bill would go down like 10 bucks a month. When I said I didn't need all of the hbo and showtime channels they brought my bill down to 150 for phone, net, and cable.

That's a whole lot of bullshit right there. The speed should never be that low. In your case, you may want to insist they come out and check your lines, and/or look into the class action suit that's going on for them not delivering promised speeds to certain customers
They told me to get bent. How did you get it to $45.31?
All I did was explain my situation, and compared to a deal they gave my friend this weekend (I don't remember all the details, but they added cable when they had none before, so they got the good introductory deal for a year)
And every step of the way I asked her to explain why it was still so high, and kept telling her to take more options out till we were down to just basic Internet

Yup, that'll always be their first attempt. Just keep pushing.
I would legitimately look at switching to fios if it were available in my area, but Spectrum doesn't know if it's not. Tell them if they can't do better than your going to switch.  When I called in i went through the prompts to take me to a rep for canceling service, then when it asked what services to cancel i said "speak to a representative". After knowing a couple people who've worked there, they always have special pricing they can offer for "customer retention"

Just checked my bill, currently I pay 54.99, my own modem, for 60mpbs.
I'm going to have to look at mine when the first bill is available. I'm 90% sure she said the price she quoted me included everything, but I'll double check... I record my calls for quality assurance purposes lol

Lol damn. Well, it doesn't have a 100%success rate i guess, but it works a lot of the time
If you can afford to go a day or two without Internet (i can't, for work reasons), you could always go through with the bluff, cancel service, then set up new service in a couple days, with some excuse about getting dicked around by the other company or something....it MAY pay off and get you the introductory rate, but no guarantee of that. And it might incur a new installation fee. It's a thought, but not necessarily a recommendation lol

Hmmm. I keep getting bombarded with the promotion for internet/tv/voip for $30./month for one year.
Currently paying $60./mo. for crappy 20mbs/down, with my own modem. WTF?
What's the supposed Spectrum going rate for internet only?

So far I seem to be winning at $45  :2funny:
But my God, it's insane how there doesn't seem to even be one set price anymore.
I've looked through their site and can only find the introductory pricing, with footnotes saying it will go up to "standard rates" after one year... I've been through about 15 links so far and can't find any list of the actual standard rates

Edit : I have to go drop my cable box off there after work today, I'll see if i can get a straight answer out of them in person

Note: They have entire teams dedicated to calling you and convincing you not to cancel. That is, specifically, offering you the deals they say you don't qualify for.

Also if you go without service briefly you can come back as a new customer at new "promo" rates.

Actual advice I received from a mid level employee of TWC/Spectrum.

We probably know the same 2 employees lol
But what one of them told me is that they can then hit you with an instalation fee. Won't always, but can if they choose to

I just reviewed my call and checked the activity on my account.
Like I said, I was quoted $45.31 all in
But then at the end of the call she mentioned a monthly fee of 44.99 (i didn't catch the difference while we were speaking)
Now I look at my account and see a line charge of: Spectrum Internet - $46.49
And another for: Spectrum WiFi Activation - $9.99 wtf?!  :knuppel2:

So there's two more things I need to discuss when I show up the this evening

Another interesting thing from my call, the woman said if I called back in a month or two to add on a new service, like getting cable again, then I would be eligible for the promo pricing again

Okay, so, at the store they aren't sure what deal this woman gave me, but said the $45 is a promotional rate that will go up after a year (which I definitely WASN'T told over the phone), and was told the standard rate for Internet only should be $60/mo

Standard Rate is $60? Haha. Or $64.99, depending on who answers the phone apparently.  :idiot2:

Found this link to a pdf through Google. This is hosted on the old Time Warner domain. Still no idea how it can be accessed through Spectrum's website
https://www.timewarnercable.com/content/dam/residential/pdfs/rate-cards/broadband-service-rates/Spectrum-Broadband-Label.pdf

According to this, $64.99 is the standard rate.
Still don't get why we have to jump through hoops to find this out

$60 for 60M internet doesn't surprise me.  Thats what I pay for my FiOS.  When I signed up,  Verizon didn't have a cheaper Internet-only option.  I will say that Time Warner can go Fuck themselves still because the only time I had to reboot my Verizon Modem in 2.5 years,  was when I moved back in April.  I also always get the same speed.

Another one of my favorites from working.  Got a Spectrum business fiber installed.  We wanted to run Fiber off the modem,  but to switch that required a work order which was backed scheduled for 4 weeks to get a tech to install a SPF even though they remotely programmed the modem in 2 days.   No they wouldn't just mail me the SF

I will say, Spectrum customer service is above par comparatively.
