New Arrival!
« on: December 05, 2017, 01:09:00 AM »
Hey y'all!!!

Remember Sophie?

Welp, unfortunately for her, she got in a fight with an 18 wheeler and lost. Pretty badly.

Luckily I was the only one in the car, and walked away without a scratch on me. Really didn't think those things were that tough!

So obviously I needed a new daily driver. The mini was nice, but there were some things I really didn't like about it. i.e. dumb maintenance costs, odd placement of the power window toggle switches (yes, toggle switches), an A/C system that sounded like it was hurting itself whenever it was on, surprisingly poor visibility, instability at high speeds, FWD, etc.

So what's a boy to do? Still wanted something sporty, but more practical and ergonomic. Something from a brand I know and trust . . .

Ayyy that's right! Mr. 20 BLK WRX 04 bought a Black 2018 WRX! But why, Mike? Why on earth would you need two black WRX's. Why the hell not? Of course I'll continue to work on my '04, all the while being able to drive a new one everyday! Yay!

Anywho, I've had her (Jamie) for about a month now, only at the 500 mile mark - I have a pretty short commute. I'm very much enjoying it. Quick, well balanced, good road/steering feeling, grippy and comfortable! I honestly couldn't wait to get back to driving a Subaru every day. Just something about them.

500 miles left till the break in period is over. What are everyones thoughts on changing the oil at the 1000 mile mark?

Holy cow, the mini's pretty mangled but I would've never guessed it was playing with an 18 wheeler.  Glad to hear you're ok.  Any mods planned?

I have no experience with Subaru's newer FAT engines, so no clue on oil change.

Wow, congrats on walking aeay unscathed! And on the new car

Compared to everything else, Oil changes are cheap and easy. I'd call it a "why the hell not" maintenance schedule

Minis are tough. Must've been scary seeing that headed right for your door.
I'm still driving my '06 supercharged Mini. I prefer it to the wrx that I had earlier, although I would buy a new wrx if the hatch returns.
Maintenance is a bitch, mainly because you have to take it apart to get at things. Mine has been very reliable, (just over 100k miles) handles great, and doesn't suffer from "high speed stability", even at (hypothetical) triple-digits. Yours is an '07 or newer?
Toggles? Love the toggles.
'06 Mini Cooper S - mildly modded
'03 WRX Wagon, Sedona Red Pearl -retired

Thanks for the well wishes! No mods planned at the moment. It was a little scary having the laws of physics aggressively working against you. I was on the highway in the right hand lane, trucker didn't see me and smashed into my side with the front of his cab as he was changing lanes. After spinning once or twice I ended up in the left lane, completely disabled. Had to get out of the car to motion people to slow down before they smashed into it.

Yep, mine was a 2012. As far a reliability goes, the high pressure fuel pump shit the bed earlier this year at <20k miles. LUCKILY was covered by an extended warranty that Mini issued on the part. Dealership didn't want to voluntarily give that information out. A little researched saved about $1,500.

Good luck with the WRX.  I've stayed away from a turbo subaru daily because I know I would screw around with it too much.  :buck2:

I tried that... and then I missed having a turbo subie.   I'm thinking non-subie next
