New Clutch
« on: December 30, 2003, 09:08:48 PM »
ok I have numerous questions; first off I think I need a new clutch, is there anyway I can find out if my clutch is worn by not taking it out?  Right now my car slips really bad in 5th gear if I get on it, and also a little in 4th.  I was told something about getting it to redline in 1st gear and shifting into 5th gear, and if its a smooth transition your clutch is bad, and if its "riding a bronco" your clutch is good.  I dont know if this is true, thats why Im posting!  Also, if I get a new clutch, what brand would you prefer I get? I was looking into Excedy, they seem like a reputable brand; and if I get a new clutch is there anything I need to do as far as tuning wise?  Im looking into upgrading things also, like a new fly-wheel, possibly a lightweight crome-alloy, and some new pulleys.  Should I get them all at once or wait and put them in seperatly.  Also about pulleys, what do you think about them, I heard if you get new pulleys, you tend to stall out at idle, because the RPM's cant keep up and also your lights are dim, because of your alternator pulley.  I would like to know what everyone things as far as what upgrades I  should get as far as, clutch, flywheel and pulleys.  Im gonna upgrade my spark plugs and possibly put headers in also.  Well thats it for now, sorry about the long post.  This stuff was on my mind and I'd thought I'd let it out.

Slipping in 5th is the first sign your clutch is going. It's under the most load in the higher gear and thats why it starts slipping in 5th first. If you drive on it long enough, you'll notice it to start to slip everytime you accelerate hard in any gear.

I would suggest, that if you are performance minded, to do your flywheel at the same time as a clutch, or at least have it resurfaced.

Exedy makes the clutches for STi so you can't go wrong there. I also like ACT quite a bit as well.

If you'd like you can give me an email and I can put toghether some pricing for you on a couple different options.

As for pullies, to give you an example, I run a fidanza 9.5lb flywheel and our TB Racing 1lb crank pulley and I have no problems with stalling or anything of the sort. With the extra torque your car has over mine downlow, you should be even better off to go light.

To solve the lights going dim, we have a lightweight pulley that is stock diameter.  So you get no accessory power loss, and you use oem belts.
You'll get the increased throttle response of a pulley kit, but not all the side effects.

let me know if you have any questions on any of this

I just got my new clutch in yesterday... I stayed with Subaru. No real sense in me upgrading when the previous one lasted 100k mi.

watch when you shift into 5th, if the rpm slip like TB said... its the first sign of it going.. and eventually youll notice it in every gear..
