Q's for people w/ remote start

basically I'd like to know who installed the system on their own.  Is it basic enough for a person who has installed full stereo's, tapped into ECU wires, and stuff of that nature?

How do you override the clutch in starting? 

I'd probably want to incorporate an alarm w/keyless entry on it so how do you get to the door locks?

And lastly, how much did you spend on the system?  I think a basic starter only is going for pretty cheap now.

I know a guy who had one in his focus, he used some kind of combination of lifting the E-brake handle, puting it into first gear, neutral, back to first then neutral and E-brake again IIRC.  Looked kind of confusing but he installed it himself, his name is Brian and last I knew he worked for truck and autowares if you know him.

Adam (silver WRX, Blitz Nur Spec exhaust, Prodrive springs, etc..) has one I'm pretty sure.
I do know that they are usually a little complicated to get them to work right on a manual transmission vehicle...
There is a certain procedure that has to be followed when parking the car or else it won't start from what I remember.

i haven't done one myself, but I'm comfortable putting in gauges, afc/avc-r, putting in a standlone ecu etc, and i didn't want to touch my remote start:)
Then again, i'm sure it is easier than we think. I'd suggest trying to find some install diagrams to see what they look like.  I paid quite a bit in having mine installed (compustar) but i know it is done right and I have a lifetime warranty on everything. That alone lead me to have it installed from a shop.

However, if you do end up trying this out, let me know. I'd be interested in helping out.

its actualy very easy to bypass the clutch. look on the top of the clutch petal and you will see a switch that is normally open. jut ground it and it makes the car think the clutch is in. subarus are very easy to install them. if you need print out on ignition wires or witch one to tap and their location let me know. if your going to get one compustar is the way to go. i have the one with 2-way and i love it. i get 3000ft of range its one of the best out their i think it goes for around $800. but i know i can get it cheaper like around $300.

p.s not to talk shit or anything. dont ever listen to what brian from truck and auto wares has to say about anything. i cant tell you how many times i had tofix his mistakes when i worked at electronics warehouse . one time we had to get the car with AAA because he fucked the ignition up on a f-150.

I was thinking of just getting the most simple/basic one for now. I'm so broke and I see them in the winter for pretty cheap. That would be good enough for me just to get me car warmed up b4 I have to drive it.

thats cool. try to go with one that is for manual trans. also try to stay away from directed electronics. or known as viper. they have range problems eversence 2003. the brands that ive never had trouble with are code alarm, AST, compu star.

what do you think about the clifford units? I know DEI bought them, but I had them in my wrx and I liked it.
I have the compustar now which i also enjoy.
Bryon, you can get these systems pretty damn cheap through ebay. There is a place that sells compustars for like $150. only thing is that you don't get any warranty if you install it yourself...and that sux:)

with viper about 1 in 10 come back in the past couple years. The clifford units i dont know much about. i didnt sell them.

I installed my 2 way compustar myself.  The more features you want, the more difficult it is to install. If you get one for an automatic, you can use an aux relay to bypas the clutch feature. if you try to bypas it permanently, your cruise won't work.

you can use your neutral switch on the tranny to tell an auto tranny remote starter that it's in park. However, you want to make sure you disable the auto locking and unlocking feature (in and out of park) or else your door locks will cycle everytime you shift.

It really isn't tooo hard if you don't mind cutting wires and shit.

i took it to audio obsessions...they did one on my s10 5spd too in the day when it was viper starters i have a compustar in there now. for 5spds you have to reserve it to start it which is basically leaving it in neutral with the ebrake on then the car turns off when the doors shut. i have no clue how it was installed cost like 300 installed.
