aftermarket head unit w/ stock speakers in the WRX?
« on: January 24, 2004, 08:14:46 PM »
I test drove one WRX today, put a deposit on another.  anyway I liked the WRX a lot (obviously, right  ) but the only thing that I didn't like was the stereo.  no matter, I have a Kenwood with an amp and two subs that I'm pulling out of the stang, but just wondering, has anyone put in an aftermarket HU w/ the stock WRX speakers and how's it sound?  I hear it sounds a lot better... I'm hoping the difference is as noticeable as it was when I pulled the mach 460 out of my current car and put the Kenwood in.

so far all i did to my stock stereo system in the wrx is put a alpine 7894 deck and it made a pretty big difference, not huge but noticible.  So you will notice a difference, next step for me is hooking up my phoenix gold 600 watt amp and my JL 10 sub

all right, good to know... now how are you mounting your amp, OCD?  I think I read somewhere on NASIOC that you can't really mount an amp to the seat back and you need to have a piece of wood there or something.  I might be confused with the STi though.. not sure.

i am not really sure wat i am doin as far as mounting the amp yet, i may mount it to the ground, like in the wood cover piece that goes over the spare tire or i may mount it to the back of the box yet, haven't really thought it through that well yet

actually I may have the carpeted plywood mounted to the back of the seat to put the amp on after all.  then build a new box for my subs (the one I have now is prefab) and a wall built.  Was talking to a guy from one of the Mustang boards I'm on, and he showed me pics of his setup and it is tiiite.

I'm jsut going to go with what I have for right now though I guess.

well the Kenwood is in, no pics yet. and what an improvement.

I would have liked the Subaru stereo a bit more if it had been able to read CD-RW's, which it didn't. :(

now the trick is to getting a hold of someone who will help me run the wires to my amp, since I"m horrible at it :(

yea no more trunk space and the box is actualy a small one, its a JL powerwedge that i used to use in my chevy K10 behind the seat, and the stock speakers do suck, but with the deck i turned the bass to -2 and the treble up 1, turned off the MX on the alpine deck and turned the amp on half power for the sub and it bumps pretty nice now, new door speakers are next

my plan was kind of opposite. i too am unimpressed with the WRX sound system (and my standards are low). i intended to use the stock head and replace all the speakers.

is it really the head unit that is the "weak link"?

trip.

I replaced the head unit on my car and added subs and its louder now, and sounds decent.. and I do like OCD does, except I turn my bass ALL the way down and let the subs handle all the bass.  unfortunately the crappiness of the stock speakers is starting to show already.  I don't get much distortion at high volumes, but there is plenty of distortion at LOW volumes (when the car is moving, but not when its sitting still, which I really dont understand) The stock speakers with a replaced head unit are just ok... but they leave something to desire.  Once i get wheels and tires and tint done, I'm going to replace all the speakers and probably also get a custom box and a new amp.  then its cobb stage 2 time

I've got the upgraded speakers, and even though they aren't spactacular, they make noise, and technically, that is their job.
Eric

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.
