Informative Thread On Transmission Oil/Fluid

Basically, don't use Mobil1 Gear oil in your transmission. Its fine in the rear dif and the crankcase (your engine), but not the transmission. Something about the sulfer in Mobil1 gear oil causing problems with the "soft" Subaru gears in 5MT transmissions. STi owners can use whatever they want (or anyone else with hardened gear sets) but, when both SOA and Mobil say don't use Mobil1 in the transmission, I think I'll avoid it at all costs. In that thread there is also a list of the recommended transmission gear oil from NASIOC.

I know beat22 (Devin?) is rebuilding his transmission right now, so hopefully it will at least be useful to him. I am losing the hardened gear sets, so this is of concern to me too  :|
Eric

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

a LOT of people with LGT's swear by Moutl (motul? however the hell you spell it). A lot of WRX'ers swear by Redline ShockProof. As long as it isn't Mobil1 :D

I might switch to redline if the royal purple really ends up sucking.  I read very mixed reviews about it on nasioc.  we'll see what happens.. so far no 1st gear grinds (which were bugging the shit out of me) 1 3rd gear and 1 4th gear though.. so we'll see.

I too would like to know why you're against Royal Purple, I will be changing the oil in the RS and Legacy shortly so I'm 'in the market' as it were.

I was considering buying a case of the Motul Motylgear 75w90.  It seems like good oil and isn't as spendy as the GEAR 300.
