"Has this vehicle been altered ,customized,or restored ?"
« on: November 08, 2006, 10:15:29 AM »
So a friend  received this Auto insurance renewal questionaire in the mail and the question that has him stumped is ."Has this vehicle been altered ,customized,or restored ?"
"If yes describe modifications and cost."

He's not really sure if he should forget to mention certain things or not :| . He has  over $12k invested in " altering/customizing his car as well as most of you have +/- .

Would you list only exterior mods to them such as a lip kit and wheels , or go more in depth into listing everything..

My girlfriends family owns an insurance company and they took pictures of my Sti wing when I got it and noted the value of it in the event it was wrecked/stolen. Same thing when I got my wheels...Probably just for claims purposes.
Didn't change my rates that I know of.

i saw a post on nabisco a while back, guy had a similar situation (mucho $$ invested) and he told his insurance company everything so that it was insured... I guess it depends on the insurance company...

byron, what do you do? You obviously have a little bit of money invested in your STI

little update for something i found on nasioc...

"Actually you'd be surprised (if he has AllState). AllState covered my aftermarket parts when someone turned in front of me. They told me to show them receipts, source the parts I wanted (myself) and they'd pay for it. I have recently talked with them about engine swaps and they said they will do the same; cover the engine and anything added as long as I can prove them with receipts."

It all depends on your insurance company, but on the whole you're probably going to be better off telling them if they ask.

That said, my insurance agent told me that I should just hang onto any and all receipts, if anything were to happen then present them to the company and they should be able to work with you.

A good friend of mine had a 91 MR2 we did a bunch of work to, V6 swap, suspension, brakes, wheels, exhaust, you name it.  He got t-boned by a buick station wagon and the car was a total write-off.  His insurance company initially wanted to give him the book value of the car, around $4k.  He made up a list of all the modifications to the car, and met with the company.  They ended up paying him for the full value of the car & mods, and selling him the wreck for the salvage value.
