auto to manual swap?
« on: December 01, 2006, 10:04:08 PM »
Ok... Just a thought... Do I need to get a manual ECU? Only wondering because if I do it its going to be right... My trans is now starting to slip and is now fully fwd... so either need to build a nasty Auto trans (which can be done)  or manual swap... I know all the mechanical stuff I need for manual swp just not sure on if the car needs to see the auto tranny...

Much THANX!

I helped do a couple in Japan, on one we changed the ECU on the other my Japanese friend who knew the wiring schematic cut and spliced some wiring to get the car to run right.
The hardest part is the  pedal assembly.

*** Note both of the cars I swapped were Nissans not Subies.

Good luck, for the ease I would say build the auto you already have.

meh... I dont really feel like chopping harnesses...

and, Ive always said I wanted to build a nasty Auto trans

Im prolly going to get a junkyard tranny and build that while I keep driving mine... I might have to wait till I get my tax return to get the stuff I want... Though i was going to buy obx headers w/ the money.. but they are only 295 so maybe i will have enough for everything...

Anyone ever have an 05 auto trans apart? Is it possible to replace the vcd w/ a regualr subaru diff? Im just tired of having a FWD biased tranny :-\ tis all

Ok... I just did the most research on the 4eat I have ever done...

Basicly the center diff doesnt doesnt actually differentiate so it is always putting out 50/50... however the front wheels are always connect w/ 0 slippage and the rears are controlled by an electronicly controlled viscous coupling... The coupling alows for slippage and subarus TCU controlss the amount of slip... thus making the BIAS 91/9.... Well the Viscous Coupling is controlld by "Duty Solenoid C" When full power is applied to Duty Solenoid C (sticking a fuse into the FWD slot in the under hood) the Solenoid closes allowing the Viscous Coupling to slip 100% making the bias 100/0 (FWD) when all power is removed, taken away/no ground,  from Duty Solenoid C then the Viscous is tightened up and No slippage is allowed, 50/50...

So i guess all I need to do to get my AWD back would be to disable Duty Solenoid C Anyone have a wiring diagram of the TCU or know exactly where the connector is?

Here is a picture of the transmission extension, that contains Duty Solenoid C... http://www.main.experiencetherave.com:8080/subaru_manual_scans/FSM_Scans/AWD_transfer_system3.jpg
 just dont know where that xconnector is when i crawl under the car..

I didn't see this in time.

A few of the previous generation Outbackers with the 4EAT have wired a switch in to make it go to full time 50/50 4WD. Unfortunately, I doubt its the same, but it may help you to look up "Outback 4wd switch"

Eric

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

Yeah all you doing is taking all power away from Duty Solenoid C and making it 50/50 i just dont know where under the car the solenoid is...im checking out the diagrams now maybe ill find something easier than crawling under the car...

As far as I know, previous gen AUTOMATIC Outbacks are 90/10, and ones with the 5EAT are 70/30, but I may be wrong there. Stick Outbacks (like mine) are always 50/50.

Here's where you should go for your shizzle.
Impreza RS-T: It's  "HOLY GOD!" fast.
Legacy GT 2.2L, VF43, Hydra, gas guzzler (18MPG when lucky)
2006 LGT Sedan Dom tuned

2007 STi.  Slowest car in my fleet.

Ok...

So I need a clutchkit and flywheel... I got an EJ25 5mt from a 99 legacy GT... Should I go stock or maybe like a stage 1? I swear I am not going to dump the clutch @ anything more than 3k....

I'm looking to go as cheap as possible... ebay crap or junkyards if I can...

EDIT: Will ej20 clutch kits fit?
