Ok sorry guys...if anyone's still interesting in reading this post...I moved to SLC, Utah right after the new year and the engine swap was not only great, it was completely necessary for the 2300 mile drive through the rockies w/ a car full of stuff and a girlfriend.  Now I've heeded much advice from everyone and found a rex engine for almost free, the only catch is that it has a knock after about 2k rpm.  It's either a rod or bearing, but not sure.  How can I tell what the problem is so I can fix it and drop it in? (Now I know, too, that I'll need an access port, clutch, eventually new tranny, etc...).
Much thanks.

if you can start/run the engine you can try to hear where the problem is, However splitting the block can reveal the problem

As far as swaping the engine, Id contact Fastfreddyrs or Imprezarsx as theyve done countless swaps.  The engine should bolt/mount in with little discrepancies.  IMO the wiring will be more difficult, especially if you're merging L harness with an wrx harness.  this reminds me, you might want to get an ecu, MAF, and wire harness from a wrx to make it easier.

BTW, Cobb Accessport=ASS
