Rota torque 17x8
« on: February 23, 2004, 10:11:53 AM »
Having given my modification list for the spring more consideration, I have come to the conclusion that I NEED new wheels and tires. Having almost crashed on my balding 18" rims and tires more than on one occasion I dont want to take any chances.
Im thinking of these:

17x8 with a 245 tire +48 offset 18.1lbs gold not silver
Im currently doing research but if anyone can tell me what kind of tire I should run (i.e. 245/XX-17).
As it stands now, I have not heard about the 245 setup rubbing so it is a viable option since the rims are $650 shipped and enough funds are left for the tires.

Thats not a bad idea. You would want 245/40R17. If you want something really sticky and decently priced, I'd go with the Kumho MX. I'll probably be a tight squeeze on there, but it'll work.

FWIW, I'm squeezing 255/40 Victoracers on a 8.5" wheel. Thats the first Rota wheel I've seen thats over 17lbs tho, I think.

It's Rota's first 17x8- but not their first over 17 lbs.  I believe the tarmac's and formels were over 17lbs.

I'd put the 245 azenis on them (known for being a "wide" 245)- shouldn't have any fitment problems.

For anyone who may be thinking about these,
apparently 245's will rub at the track (under hard cornering)-   235's may be better if you don't plan on rolling your fenders.  225's will even fit.

Mic Rojas (president of Rota) has a pair on 245 for the street and actually has 225 on them for the track.  I think I decided to go back the lighter attack and use 225's on them (Azenis)-   That should be a nice compromise for daily driving and tracking- (I can't justify daily driving on 245's- I imagine the rolling resistance will hinder my mpg)

Just my thoughts-

I did a bunch of calculating before I bought rims and tires. I wanted to keep the stock outer diameter so my speedo would be accurate. If you want to do any calculations for tire size, PM me and I'll send them to you.  Bottom line, I found that 225/45/17 worked great. The tires are Nitto Neo-Gens. They're great on the street, but I have no track experience to speak of, so I can't help you there. I talked with a mustang guy I work with before buying tires and he said, based on experience, Nittos (particularly the 555) held up much better to track driving than the Kumho.

I had Nitto 555's on the mustang and they lasted a pretty long time.

would there be any benefit from running an 8" over a 7.5" besides being able to run a wider tire? I imagine that the wider rim would provide more stability... but I have no facts to back it up.
245 are too big, so Im inclined to go with 235 but I also want to keep the stock diameter. Im going to go with beam's calculations.
Off to search for some more affordable and lightweight rims...

The only difference 1/2" of rim will give you is a wider tire with less bulge.

I'm putting in a rota order this week and have to buy extra sets. If you're interested I can maybe work a deal with you to take a set of these off my hands...
