Noob installing turbo back. Questions?
« on: April 11, 2007, 11:50:55 AM »
I'm finalizing a deal with a guy on NASIOC for a BPM exhaust, should pick it up this weekend. Let's just assume that all I am getting is the down, center pipe (with high flow cat) and axle back. What will I need in terms of hangers and gaskets?

Also, my car is completely stock engine/exhaust wise so will I need to get a new up pipe, or is that something that would help but is not necessary (I remember reading about the front cat over heating and disintegrating if you added a turbo back). Another concern is the "while you're down there..." issue. While I'm doing the turbo back will I be smarter to install a new up pipe at that time? Or is it such a different installment that doing it at a later date will take just as long. Also, what are (if any) the issues of CELs with no uppipe/downpipe Cats.

Any other words of wisdom? I figure I will put this on the weekend of the 28th, after I assemble everything I need.

I have general mechanical know-how, did my springs, struts, brakes, spark plugs, oil/tranny fluid changes and other things. I'm not intimidated about getting my hands dirty. I'd do my clutch (which I still need to do!, getting every last mile out of it!) if I had the tools.

P.S. It's the guy in Tri-State selling the BPM exhaust, if any of you try and buy it out from under me...

what year is your car?

Catless Up-pipe is a good idea if you are doing a turbo back (or even if you don't).
You should be able to use all of your stock hangers, new gaskets would be a plus (downpipe/midpipe/axelback,etc...)

The Up install is a little easier when doing the downpipe only because there is an up-pipe stud that is hidden under the downpipe. But it is no big deal to take the downpipe off anyway.

You will throw a cat inefficiency code with your turbo-back and EGT code for the catless up-pipe. Resistor will take care of the EGT and a bung extension will clear the cat code.

Get your car I-Tuned by Dominic and you will be good to go - all CEL's can be turned off with a laptop and tactrix too which will net you a passing inspection as long as they don't see your pipes.

Good luck with the installs and where do you live out of curiosity?

-Dan.

the install of a turbo back should maybe take an hour. the uppipe on the other hand, add about 3 hours to get that out and a new one installed.

I talked to the guy I'm getting it from. He passed inspection with it and to fix the CEL from the Cat removal (removal of 2nd cat) he just "extended" the 02 sensor to fit the bung after the High Flow Cat. Apparently, in another thread about the same model BMP exhaust, "extending" means to unclip the ties that currently hold the sensor and to retoute it more efficently. So no splicing/soldering/extending needed.

Where can I get gaskets, any recommendations? Also, new hangers? The car is dropped on KYB AGX and Eibach springs.

Car is a 2002 Impreza WRX, with under 50K miles. Why does the mileage matter? It doesn't but I like to point out how low it is for a 5+ year old car.

This is an example of a bung extension

you just put your O2 sensor in it and it into your pipe.

You drill out the top piece to fit the O2 sensor in it and the bottom piece is what pulls it out of the exhaust stream.

The "HELP" Antifouler cost less than $5 and all you have to do is drill out the end on one piece a little bit (takes 1 minute)

Picked up the exhaust today. BPM TT (twin tip). It's a divorced downpipe (catless) to a centerpipe with a high flow cat, and a twin tip straight through design muffler.

3"s all through. I need to clean it up a bit before I put it on (also need gaskets, and I think I might heat wrap the downpipe while it's off).

I heard this exhaust at a meet about a year ago and knew that if I ever saw it for sale (used, it's $1,200 new!) I'd have to grab it. Someone put it on NASIOC and I grabbed it today.

More information: http://www.bpmsports.com/products/tt.htm

Anyone know where I can gaskets locally?
