Ok new to SCCA, and Solo II ... some questions
« on: March 03, 2004, 04:50:39 PM »
Basically I am TOTALLY stock except BOV, and muffler.  Those are the only two things that are not stock that I am aware of.  Can someone help me out here?  Basically I just need to know where to start, and what not.  Anything would be a big help.  I do intend on getting rims, I was thinking probably like 17" rota's, possilby attacks.

Also is there a such thing as a SCCA racing TEAM?  (for instance Team Unysoc)?

well, BOV puts you right in SM class, where you would be totally outclassed and prolly not have any fun.

I'd swap the BOV for your stock one, when you race so that you can class into a lower class and be more competitive. Muffler is legal in Stock class, but the wheels will put you into STX (verify byron?).

There really aren't racing teams for Solo 2 because its mostly an individual sport, but most of my club/racing team goes to events together and we just have a good time, so we can all do the same for unysoc. :)

Getting Started

You do not need ANY modifications to autox, so don't feel you need to modify anything to do well.  In many cases, modifications to your car will actually make your car less competitive ( especially if you are a rookie driver).  As you get better, and learn your driving style- then you can start modding your car.  You will be able to make better decisions about mods.

All of my Solo II experience has been in San Diego, so rules may be a bit different here-  but in general- when you start out -don't worry about what class you are in.  Most regions, if not all, have a Novice run group, and you first few events you should run this group.  You will have a more experienced driver walk the course with you, and also sit in on your runs if you want.   Bottom Line:  Figure out what event you want to go to.  Show up early, and have a ton of fun!

Ok then thanks guys.  SOOOOOO anyone got a Stock BOV they want to sell cheapo :)?  So I should be alright If I have upgraded suspension, (strut bars, springs, and what not)?

17" Rims will keep me in stock class?  If not what do you suggest?  Are stock rims sutable for AutoX?

Sorry about so many questions I just want my first year to be done right, and have fun keeping up with others.

Hey,

You may not want to classify your car in "Stock" (D Stock/DS).    The class that sounds most suited for you right now is STX.  It is a class modified cars (that have the popular modifications such as exhaust, and rims and so forth)  The "stock" class runs on full race tires- and they are wicked quick.

I plan on running STX.  My car is completely stock right now (I have some parts to install) and if I was lucky enough to run today, I would run in STX as opposed to DS (stock).

FYI,   I don't think anyone would protest your BOV if you ran STX (especially if you were a novice). There is no huge performance advantage to it if you are running stock boost (arguable)-  so don't go to the earth's end to find a stock one.  If you can, great-  if not- no worries.

Feel free to keep the questions coming.  We were all new at this once.  I still learn something everytime I get to run.

when i autoxed my stock-except-for-a-bov-wrx i got classed in SM because of it....you do not want that to happen.

I agree that STX is a great class to start out in, but its also one of the MOST, if not THE most competitive classes that WRX's are in. Be careful about that too. D-Stock-Novice is a good class to be in for starters...

Screaming- damn that stinks-  People in SoCal were pretty easy about stuff like that. I was running my Integra with Koni's and Springs, Type R sway bar, and Azenis in STS against FULLY gutted Protege's and Civics on r compounds.  One guy was running cams.  They never got protested.  I really didn't care what others were doing (as long as they weren't effecting the trophies.)  I wasn't out there to beat other people, just trying to improve my own times   Having said that, I can understand people that were very sensitive to the rules.

Td- I feel for you man.  But-  you'll still have fun!  You'll still earn respect for at least getting out there.

youll be in STX without the BOV... with the BOV SM, i believe that ST classes allow up to 1in above stock rim size, so 17s are leagal in the ST classes... prob the best mods to get is a set of good tires and some suspension parts...

you guys pretty much covered everything I would have to say.

Mohud SCCA will put you in SM because I run registration and I do it by the book so noone will be mad at me.

If it's your first year you wont win anyway(I'm not being mean).  I think we may be running a novice class this year so just come and run novice in whatever class you fall in.  If you love it and want to do it again next year buy a rulebook, pick a class you want to run in and mod away.

just because you're a rookie driver doesn't mean there aren't people out there w/less skills.
SM is a tough class, but you don't need to have alot of power to do well.  I had the least hp and ended the season last year 2nd in class for the Chicago region  8)

besides....it's all about fun     ARG!
