4-point harnesses
« on: March 07, 2004, 07:59:16 PM »
Anybody have an idea who/what to use? are there any issues with installation? drilling, etc?
I have a pegasus catalog, and I'm still price shopping, but If i can get a sanctioned harness outside the normal realm of subaru vendors for cheap, I will.
Oh yeah, anybody have an opinion on open faced vs. closed helmets?

I have 4 points in my car now, (hopefully ill have it in a week HOPEFULLY ) um i just had to replace the seat mounting bolts with the harness ones ,um backseat passengers suffer but if you dont use your back seat to often its really not an issue, secondly for helmets  i use a motorcycle helmet with the visor removed and i like to race like that i know of a couple that use the same and a few that use the open best bet is just borrow one of each and see how you feel driving with it

I wear open faced for visability reasons and cause I wear glasses it's easier to deal with between runs.

If you're insecure at all, openfaced makes everyone look like geeks, so don't wear one if that bothers you :)

What for
« Reply #4 on: March 07, 2004, 11:18:18 PM »
Beam - I have used both open and closed face helmets.  It really depends on what you are buying it for.  If it is for autox, an open face is really great for visibility.  If you ever plan on doing a track day, a closed face is usually a requirement, so I went ahead and bought a closed face to use for both.  I don't have it anymore (it was in my car when it was stolen (just got back from a track day at Streets of Willow) so I am in the market for another full/closed face helmet.

As far as harnesses, I wouldn't recomend running one on a street driven car unless you have a roll cage or bar.  Just in case of a roll, you would really maximize the chances of a head injury if you were harnessed in without roll protection.  A couple companies make harness bars which are a safe anchor for a harness, but don't offer roll protection.  Lokar is one of the companies that comes to mind.

In any case,  I have a really effective harness in my miata (attached to my rollbar)-  you are welcome to come by and try it as a starting point.

Thanks for the offer. I might have to do just that. I was looking at harnesses for track time (and the odd run on the backroads). I'm aware of the risk of head injury. I'm just wondering if theres fitment issues between companies, or if thats even a concern. I really have no idea what to look for. I need to search the "other" larger forums, but I was wondering if any of you guys had any recommendations.
nat, I will look you up before I leave, when the weather gets better. Who'd a thunk it would snow again?

Both Helmet and car were stolen.

So the bright side is the last time that I drove the car was at Willow Springs, and I had a great day.-  I'll post some pics of the recovered car when I have more time.

Miata is out of commision if there is snow on the ground-  Azenis on a Miata+ Snow = out of commision. - but you can always come by and sit in it- you'll get a great feel for a good harness system- and how weird it feels at first.  Besides-  if you drive the miata- you may end up buying it

Harnesses are great for auto-x. As far as street driving or trackdays goes rollover protection is HIGHLY suguested. I know NASA-NE requires it for harnesses on trackdays but I think PDA allows them thou.
