Times Union.. Worst Story EVER@! <-READ! IT!!

Ok.. Make sure you read it all the way through.. This editor is idolizing Highway Speed Freakz... Granted I am one myself, but I dont believe anyone going out, and risking their life and lots of others should be IDOLIZED!

I wrote a letter the the Editor... I hope everyone does the same.. Publishing BS like this is retarded.... Now all the little 16yo with tacomas are going to go flying down the northway @ ridiculous speeds...

Granted I'm a bit jealous I cant be idolized for doing illegal shit... But it really is bad that people have to read this and think its cool to speed...

I posted about this on Nasioc.  The guys ripped into the driver and author.  Alacrity024 sent the author several messages asking why he was promoting unsafe driving.

He's on R-Speed and one of my friends. The journalist made it look a lot worse than it did.
Quote from him:
"yeah i dunno i had hoped it would be a side note a simple brief story

then i heard it was going to be in the paper on monday so i put it up on here, really a stupid move on my part

i wanted the article to be about how its an every day vehicle with almost 200,000 miles on it and i will be attempting to reach 200mph this year and 240 next year once the engine is rebuilt

the journalist asked me to go for a ride and show him the results of my labor and i punched it for about 5 seconds then slowed down cause we were coming up on traffic

then we got off the exit and as we turned around to come back it started to rain so bad that all of the hiway traffic was doing about 40 (i wasnt speeding) and i was hydroplaining (slipping as he said in the article)

i guess he forgot to take in to consitteration that my smaller "race" tires are infact MUCH smaller than the stock 31"tire causing the speedometer to read 95mph when keeping up with traffic in a 55 zone

the guy made it sound like all i do is speed and i dont give a f-k about anyone else on the road

i have more than my fair share of tickets i have paid my dues and learned my lesson

occasionally yes i speed but who doesnt

all i want to so is see how fast my truck can truly go and inorder to SAFELY do that i have to bring it to the salt flats where i have to pass several tech inspections

if you all want to bust on be for liking to go fast and bringing my truck to the track you better think twice cause im just the same as all you other guys at the lot who are proud of your mustangs and comaros and montecarlos and civics and whatever else you got

we all love cars we all love to talk about cars and to make them go faster
i just happen to have a truck and a bad journalist"

not only is it promoting unsafe driving but on public roadways, WTF!!! And the author sucked at writing this article it sounds like a 5th grader could put words and sentences together better...Go to a sanctioned SCCA event at limerock or the glen and get your license and you can speed legally!! Granted auto-x is great but some people just need to go faster kind of like me in a few years when i get enough money to fund a Spec. Miata!!

I'm pretty sure most of the negative sentiments, though at first directed at the driver, have been shifted to the Author and the TU.  Can you ask your friend if I can post his response on Nasioc?  Right now, we only have one side of the story--the article.  Having both is way better.  Lemme know, I won't post until he ok's it.

Everybody drives like a maniac from time to time, don't deny it!
Ever taken someone for a ride in your car before? Bet you shifted at 3K every time.

The TimesUnion shouldn't have stated him driving like that in public though, that's bad form.  :police:
Pretty incriminating stuff.

yeah but 160 + slicks + rain? I've never gotten close to that, and when i do drive "spirited" its with good weather conditions, good tires, and a car that's more designed for such an activity...

Well, he posted his response on nasioc.  Got to admit, the guy does have some balls.  It was good to get his side of the story too.

hence why the original title of the thread has remained unchanged "...May be a tool".  Not "is" a tool.  Though the reporter/writer is undoubtedly a person lacking in common sense.

Well there isn't... But when some one walks up to goes "Awesome car, you really beat the hell outa that thang racing, you should come check out some real cars on rspeed" I go to rspeed.. and get greeted by a kid with a cutlass, and another with a saturn, and another with a blown up STi and a saturn, and sum dude with a pic of a prototype Camaro in his sig....

So now when soemone says R-Speed, I think of crappy American crap cars and JVG..  Hence why we can laugh about

"where is this 160mph pickemup truck guy from?"
"O, he just got on rspeed...."
"Figures, ahahahaha"

Nothing personal against you mike. It's just I would prefere not to associate with the guys on your forum... Hence Why I haven't been frequenting it as much...

Hi my name is Peter Robinson, the so-called “Serial Speedster” who was profiled in Monday’s Times Union.

It is amazing to me, how many inaccurate twists and turns that story took.  I was given the impression that the focus of the article would be about how I’ve worked to transform my truck from an everyday vehicle to a racing machine capable of setting the World Speed Record.  Instead, the journalist decided to focus on my past, and because of his exaggeration, I have been made out to be a dangerous driver.

There has been a violent reaction to the article, and I would like the opportunity to set the record straight.

First of all, Filkins mentions that I’ve had “more than 20 speeding tickets.”  True, I have more than my fair share of tickets. When Filkins asked me, "How many tickets have you had," I answered 15, maybe 20 in a sarcastic, joking manner, not wishing to talk about my driving history, but to bring the focus back to the subject at hand. In fact, a look at my DMV record shows that I have a total of seven tickets in the past five years, only three of which were speeding tickets.

We DID NOT go 160 mph or drive recklessly in the rain.  The journalist asked me to go for a ride and show him the results of my labor.  As we got on the highway I pushed the accelerator for 5 seconds or so, and we reached a POSSIBLE 85mph, then slowed down because we were coming up on traffic.  I guess he forgot to take into consideration that my smaller "race" tires are in fact MUCH smaller than the stock 31" tire, causing my speedometer to read somewhere around 85mph when keeping up with traffic in a 55 zone.  I use smaller tires for more torque and better launch times where I race in a controlled environment at Lebanon Valley Dragway.  Therefore, any estimate of the truck’s speed is based on a calculation of RPMs, gear ratios and a number of other factors.  Not only is Mr. Filkins not qualified to make the claim that we rode at such extreme speeds, but he is erroneous in doing so.

Then we got off the exit and as we turned around to come back, it started to rain... so badly that all of the highway traffic was doing about 40 (myself included) and I was hydroplaning because of the slicks (“slipping” as he said in the article).  Mr. Filkins made it sound like all I do is speed and made it seem like I don’t care about anyone else on the road, which in fact is not true.

Just the other day, I was passed by a minivan that was cruising on the bumper of the car in front of it.  The van was packed with kids, and a woman, who I assume was the mother, was driving.  The car was loaded with smoke, since all the windows were up, and not only was she smoking with the windows up, she was on her cell phone.  I couldn't do anything but shake my head.  As she drove away I noticed that the 2 passenger side tires were severely under inflated which aggravated me even more.   Underinflated tires lead to blowouts and blowouts lead to rollover accidents.  I tried to pull up next to her to inform her but the traffic was too congested.

I just want to see how fast my truck can truly go and in order to SAFELY do so IN A CONTROLED Environment.

In order to do that I have to spend thousands of dollars on safety equipment.  I am required among other things to have...

a certified safety cage (incase of a roll over)

fire extinguisher system

fire suit, gloves and shoes

racing seat

racing harness

helmet

parachute
racing tires

racing wheels

change the center of gravity of the truck by lowering it

Many of us love cars and love to talk about cars with the latest and greatest modifications. I just happen to have a truck and a bad journalist.  Thank you for your fairness and willingness to listen to my side of the story

Welcome, Peter!  It's good to hear your side of the whole thing.  I've seen on a few forums now where you've had to undo what's been done with all the negative publicity; and I can honestly say, that sucks.

Then again, it is the media, so there's always going to be some sort of spin on things, in this case it was rather negative for automotive enthusiasts as a whole.  But I'm glad to see you out trying to set things straight.

Good to hear from you and best of luck with your truck, sir!

It is good that you've cleared things up a bit. The articles by TU was full of libel.  They certainly did a poor job... good luck with the land speed record, sounds like you're pretty committed and doing things the right way.

Hey Peter, as others have already said, thanks for your side.  When I read that article, I was like ..WTF!.  I mean, we all speed at one time or another but 160 on the northway.  Now that I hear your side, the non- media side, seems much better and you dont seem to be the ass I thought you were when reading.     Welcome to the forum.  Keep that legacy going.  they are nice cars and good luck on that speed record deal.  Thats a great opportunity to drive on those salt beds.
