'99 Honda Accord (Sorry)
« on: January 02, 2008, 08:28:51 AM »
Ok, not Subaru related...

Wife's '99 Accord wont start. Two days ago while turning a corner it stalled and wouldn't start. Pushed it home, put a bit of gas in it (figuring it was empty - gauge was close but not on E so it was a little odd) and it started up. Took maybe 10 minutes to get home.

This morning, went out to start it and it wouldn't start. Just cranks.

Research says Main Relay (WTF? kind of vague, know its under the steering column), ignition switch, fuel pump, alternator, or coil/igniter.

I don't hear the fuel pump kick on when the key is first turned to the on position - typical sign of main relay. Also, the lights don't freak out while driving/etc, which pretty much rules out ignition switch. So now I'm down to fuel pump or Main Relay.

Anyone else got any experience with this? Of course it happened when we're broke and the first day back to work in like a week.

Thanks in advance.
Eric

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

how much gas did you put in? did you try more gas?

main relay is PROBABLY inside one of the fuse boxes... if not just reove the piece of plastic under the wheel and see if you can see it bolted to something in there.. Its not going to buried really far up in the dash...

good luck..

There should ALSO be a fuel pump relay and a fuse, good idea to check those 2...Probably in the fuse box under the hood....

the next thing to do would be to get to the fuel pump connector and make sure it has power there, if it does then it is a bad pump...

id check fuel and spark.  your diagnosis is ok, but lacks real testing

when you crank the car can you smell fuel?

find the fuel pump access.  have someone crank the car while you hold a screwdriver on top of the fuel pump.  put an ear near the other end of the screwdriver.  if your fuel pump is working you'll hear electrical whine.

if both of those check out then its probably spark or relay related

try pulling a spark plug out and grounding while someone cranks the car.  see if the car is getting spark.

next check for burnt fuses and test the relays.  sometimes if you try to jump the car<not saying you did> but you can blow fuses from too much amperage

if you need help probing relays let me know. luckily for you i just bought a new multi-meter for diagnosing electric issues.

the threeoneeight died when turning a corner.  it turned out to be the fuel pump.  i checked all the relays and fuses and finally the fuel pump when trying to figure out what was the problem.

in the mean time try and find the main, ignition, and fuel pump relay

What is the last thing that was done to the car?  Possibly bad/ loose/ disconnected ground somewhere.

Well, there's 'usually' a fuel pressure relief somewhere on the fuel line around the fuel filter- generally passenger's side firewall.  You can pull the bolt, cover it with a rag or something (to cover fuel spray), and turn the ignition on- you should see fuel coming out.  Also, if you have a timing gun, you can use the spark inductor clamp over the wire to cyl #1 (or any of them for that matter) to check for a spark signal, at least.

There's always fire, which can generally solve all your problems with an insurance check. :)

Also, the main relay will be in the underhood fuse box- should be somewhere in engine bay towards front, driver's side- I think.

Main relay on an Accord should be in front of your left knee under the dash. Bigger than a normal relay. Find it and smack it hard(I used to kick mine). When they go bad, they stick and you can somtimes get some more runtime. Easy to change.

Thanks everyone for all of the posts.

More info: Monday when it died: Put in .5 gallons, car started and drove to the gas station. Put in 13.5 gallons in a 16 gallon tank... so it wasn't out of fuel... but it started and ran fine later that night and yesterday.

Today: My incomplete testing was due to having about 3 minutes to do something before having to go to work. It was about 7am. Research is what told me about the common main relay and ignition switch problem.

I'll try banging on the main relay to see if I can get it to start. If I can, I'll go get a new one.

Sean: If I can't get this, I'll let you know. Don't want to make you drive all the way up for nothing.

Another note: Prior to this happening I could hear the fuel pump kick on momentarily before actually starting the car. Right now I can't. That happens with a Main Relay (and a few other things, like the FP relay and fuse as well). The Main Relay is also noted everywhere online as being a steaming pile. Hopefully that's all it is, since it'd be cheaper than a fuel pump :(

I'll keep you all updated. I am going to work on it after work today. I was going to call in today to fix it but one of my co-workers is sick so we were already short staffed.

UPDATE:
Go out to the car this afternoon - won't start. Kick dash in several places - car starts.

Rushed to the dealership to get a new relay since they go bad anyway and it wasn't terribly expensive. Going out to try to work my way into the footwell to install it.

Thanks everyone for their help.

Replaced the relay, car starts faster than ever. Fuel Pump audibly cycled for 2 seconds as expected.

The main relay might have been bad but...

Car wont start again.

This time? My guess is that its the ICM, but I need some help testing it ASAP. Anyone available today or tomorrow?

I gotta say, the 'soc is the best forum on the internet.

Sorry guys - We had to head up to the Hospital to visit my grandfather. I really appreciate you guys stopping over. I forgot my cell at home.

I should be getting the part Tuesday or Wednesday if anyone wants to stop over for a super fast install meet.

Yeah, my awesome "self diagnosis" skills.

I'm not a very good mechanic

However...

I replaced the ignition control module per a few "FAQ's" I found online that were pretty in depth. Short of testing the ICM out of the car (which I don't have the capabilities to do) or taking it somewhere (which I don't have the money to do), I did ever test I could find to rule out the coil as the other possible cause for it to not get spark (which I verified that it wasn't).

Car does start now. We'll see how long it lasts. Regardless, between the two parts we replaced, the car runs significantly smoother now.
