prosport install help wiring
« on: December 26, 2008, 05:35:00 PM »
So, tried to install my prem elec boost today.
instructions suck but got it done. and problem. My gauge will not turn on.  There is power getting to it..
Red = Constant Power Source Clock/Audio Unit- Fuse #24
White = Left off per instructions to have amber/amber
Orange =??? not even mentioning in instructions but using a vamp clip, clipped to red wire.
Black = Grounded using vamp into radio ground

and so gauge doesn't power up. any ideas.  Maybe its the orange wire.  Not sure what it is or what type of power it needs.  I used a "add-a-circuit" to wire to fuse box.

what car is this going into? (i've heard some wire colors changed depending on the year)

and when you say orange into the red wire, was that the red wire on the radio harness?
I'll have to see if I can pull mine back apart and check, but I'm pretty sure I have 3 wires into the radio harness and one wire into somewhere around the back of the HVAC controls

last thought, are you sure your ground is good? I used the vamp clips too, but they sometimes suck at making good connections

IIRC.... black is ground (obviously), red is switched (ign.) power, white is CONSTANT 12v power, and orange is your dimmer/headlight.

EDIT: make sure you use some dielectric grease or some vaseline on those vampire connectors as they love to corrode up those wires  :|

Installing into my 08 hatch.
the way i have it.
from prosport-----car

Red -------------fuse 24 which is audio unit/clock fuse (using an add-a-circuit)

orange-----------Had vamped into prosport red wire but changed to violet wire from radio harness(Illumination wire I believe)

White -----------didn't connect at first for amber/amber(thats what prosport instructions said)  but this one I just tried connecting to my add-a-circuit.  read someone put red and white together and was fine

Black------------- ground from radio

Even with changes, nothing happens with gauge.  think its my luck and got a defective one.  Tested and 12 going into the white connector that goes into gauge

any update?

I realized when re-reading this, I don't have the premium gauges, so checking my wiring won't help you much.  But, maybe you should try ditching the vamp clip for the ground and grounding it somewhere more securely?

Quote from: the FAQ on www.prosportgauges.com
Q: My Performance Series Electric Boost gauge does not come on at all?
A: This gauge uses a specific wiring harness and more than likely you have inadvertantly swapped harness's with another gauge. The wiring harness color order for the electric boost gauge is: white, orange, red, black & green
but it sounds like you're only installing the one gauge, so this probably isn't the issue?

I'll try re-grounding elsewhere.  Gauge still isn't turning on
Never hurts to try everything for sending in the gauge. I'll have to contact prosport.

to check if the gauges i used a motorcycle batt that was laying around the shop held back to ground twisted the others togeather and touched them to positive. just an idea to make sure they actually work and your wiring is not off

I'm a bit confused with one thing here.  This is Prosports description of the wires:
Red  -Constant 12v power
Black-Ground
White-12v ignition power
Orange-headlight switch
Green –Sender

So, I'm assuming the red "Constant" is for the Peak warning memory.
And White 12v Ignition, that would have to be to turn the guages on and off with the car, right?

Then, wouldn't tapping the white into the red cause the gauges to be on constantly, even with the car off?
I know that's the exact opposite of the problem you're having here, it's just something that's been nagging at me since reading that

I think I just figured it out:

People that have put red and white together successfully probably had the performance series, not premium.  On the performance gauges,  Red and White wires are both for 12v ignition.  Whereas, in your case, one is a contstant power supply to store Peak warning memory and Audible Alert Settings

Green wire?  Mine doesn't have a green. Just the 4.  Tonight when i get home, gonna cut my wires and put red/white to + on battery and black to - terminal.  i emailed prosport.  Ryan(from prosport) said he hasn't heard of a gauge not at least lighting up before and said to test it by doing this, then let him know.  this is killing me. parents feel bad cause was their gift to me

no green wire? then what wire connects it into the sender unit? You haven't mentioned that connection yet, but I just assumed that part was okay

tell the parents not to worry, I've yet to hear a single bad story about anyone getting screwed by these guys, Ryan will get you straightened out I'm sure, even if it means replacing it

The green wire is on the sensor harness, not the power harness. Disregard the green wire info...

And yes, the two power wires are for memory of the peak/hold, which backlight is on with the headlights, and to turn the gauge on.

woops, sorry, on the performance guages it's just one harness.  And the Prosport site didn't specify it was seperate either.

didn't mean to confuse things, just tryin' to help  :|

well, looks like going back to prosport.  I cut my wires to test on the battery and nothing happened.  Didn't even light up.  Just waiting to hear back from ryan.

and you tried connected directly to the battery you said.  that is weird. maybe those stupid little clips they use to hook the wires into the white plastic clip that plugs into the back?

i had to email them just a week or 2 ago when i accidentally pulled a few wires out of there and couldn't remember the order they went in.

guess now we wait and see what happens when you get it back

ok, so got gauge back and wired up.  Now, cause im so awesome, it only turns on when headlights are turned on.  screwed something up there but im to tired to mess with it.
Also, now this is my first boost gauge, but it doesn't line up with zero.  when I start car it lines up with 20 under zero and when I when for quick drive, it went to only 7 over zero.    Grrrr, dont tell me after sending to prosport already that its f'ed.

i cant win

ok, good to know. may seem stupid but Ive never seen a gauge in action.  I guess common sense would say that there is still pressure and vacuum there.
