Drivetrain Service.
« on: January 17, 2009, 12:13:08 PM »
Today I Spent some money. :|
 But I saved almost 200.00 .

The car recieved Kendall Syn Motor Oil  I stopped using Mobil 1 [ I do not need an excuse to buy Forged Pistons/ Pauper Rods Ect. ] :uglystupid2:
BG Ultragaurd Syn Tranny and Diff Oil.  25 Bucks a Quart. Shits Expensive.. :-o

WOW!  Now I was about 10k over 40k for this service and prolly should of done it sooner but the funds were not available.

I had some small issues shifting and hoped that this service would take care of it. Examples like getting into 1st rolling, or parked for that matter. Downshifting I really noticed how it was a lot more stressful to get it in gear. Sometimes it seems I would have to blip the throttle a little more than normal to rev match. Even stress the shifter to "Get in gear". I really plan on auto crossing this year So I need to get these types of things addressed.

I had some metal on the gathering plug but nothing more than normal. Inspection showed I will most likely have to get new gaskets to ensure a proper seal on my stage II upgrade.

First Impressions Driving/Shifting were  :-o :smitten:, I could not believe how easily the car shifted now, Shifting is so much easier!, and I can shift a whole hell of a lot faster.  I beat on her a little bit to feel how SMOOTH the overall driving  of the car felt. Feels Brand Spanking New Again.  Even smells Good when it warms up. I know  "Betty" Enjoys it and feels this Great Product running through her. Therefor she should perform well for me.

I Should of done this sooner.

"BG Ultra-Guar provides thermal stability, smoother gear shifting, optimum drive line efficiency, quieter operation, protection against wear, pitting and corrosion, seal compatibility and improved seal performance, improved fuel efficiency, reduced maintenance, long drain life, extended component life." So that sold me.

When I had my Scooby bugeye and did the 30k service  I don't remember it feeling this smooth, even on acceleration.. It almost feels like its quicker {placebo} IDK.
I am sure the Synthetic oil has a Great Significance, but still hands down I think I found a Life long Product.

Kinda like my No 25 detailing Wax.. LOL

so what did you put in the tranny?  I think i'm gonna do mine on the wagon (5sp.) and I was considering the uncle scotty cocktail from Nasioc.

oops, edit: I see BG ultragaurd.  where'd you get that?

I wouldn't recommend mixing oils , has anyone ever done a oil analysis  to see how it performs . I never found one so I never trusted it.

Alot of these places around here stock BG Products you just gotta look.

You can find em online around 20 bucks
or Dealers actually a lot of them are dealers so they would have it.I know Saab on Central is a BG Dealer. But prolly charge 28 a qt IDK.

BG 750 is the 75W90.  As an example link.

If you let me know in advance I can send ya to Matt and he uses BG Products. I could get ya a slight discount their. Think its like 120.00.

BTW, that stuff has an 'expiration date' in your transmission.  I wanna say 1 year, Jay-R dibble knows for sure.

Affirmative.  But I can't exactly remember 'how short'.  I'll PM Jay-R on CNY and report back.   :-)

For what it's worth, at Vermont Sportscar, they had a tranny dissasembled and all the gears were in a fluid bath that looked just like USC.  For them, it wouldn't be a problem since they rebuild or swap out transmissions after every event.

Jay-R hooked me up with some information.  It's a mileage limit, as opposed to time.   :-)

Quote from: dibblejr
It's actually 20K miles however I used 1 year because thats how long it was taking me to get the 20K with the wagon.

Man you must have dug that statement out of a very old thread.

FWIW- it is unknown if the cocktail is good in the 6 speed tranny. This may have been updated on NASIOC, but I am not as active there as I was before moving.

Uncle Scotty pm'd me about 4 years ago and informed me of the 20K interval.

well, that's not too bad. 20k takes me a little while.  I know I could did out my book but what is the typical change interval for those fluids anyway?

How long do you plan on running the BG Marty?

Byron,

I am going to run it 30k. If it starts gears feeling sticky around 20k I might swap it out again.

Hey Guys, I want to chime in as I just had experience with a drivetrain service. I work as a auto tech
and did a drivetrain service using Redline Oil. I used a gear oil called heavy shockproof gear oil 75w30 fully synthetic.
I have a friend back home that used to work at Vermont Sports Car. I was told by one of their mechanics to try this. I must say,I was shocked by the change it made. Well worth the 14.95 per qt.. I ordered it online two days. I'll help you change if needed just stop by my work!!

a lot of people claim they spin a bearing/throw a rod and it's due to mobil one.  IDK but I ran the 20w50 in my sti all summer with no issues...

I think most of the blown motors are people running 5w30 and I guess that's like water.  I wouldn't suggest anyone with a turbo car run any 5w30 ever.

so would switching to the said 20w50 be nicer to my motor than the oem recommended 5dub30?

yeah 20w-50 is more for high horsepower engine and u dont really need to use it if you are running as a syntetic, 10w-40 syntetic oil is better that 20w50 mineral oil plus you dont have to wait to the engine to warm up completelly to get full oil pressure

20w50 is a motor oil for high temperature applications with a larger amount of shear force.  (i.e. Byron running 25psi on a 90 degree day for sustained periods).  The tradeoff is the higher viscosity also makes for less efficient lubrication, as the oil will resist flow into smaller crevices and spaces.  This is why they tell you to wait until your motor and oil are fully warm, so that your tolerances can properly expand with the heat and the pressure will naturally come back down a bit. You've all seen it.  ~80psi cold driving,  ~40-50psi hot driving.  This is also a good reason to pay close attention to the temperatures that the oil will see - both from cold start to peak temps under load.
If you're running track events and beating the piss out of the oil, 20w50 will work fine.  If you're doing high performance street driving in summertime, 10w40 is a great weight.  If you're driving a turbo car in the winter, I usually recommend 5w40.   IMO, any -30 weight oil is a bit on the light side for a turbocharged car that sees frequent heavy load (acceleration) or cold-starts without much warmup time.
