tranny noise
« on: April 27, 2004, 11:05:47 AM »
I get this weird whining noise from the tranny when its warmed up, most noticable in 4th and 5th. Its only present when I accelerate and if i listen carefully its there in neutral while idleing but not with the clutch in. any ideas? possibly the throwout bearing or is my tranny final kaput (60k miles).

can you describe the noise a little better?

is it a whining / grinding when driving?

does it kinda sound like a rattling when in neutral?

usually a whining that goes away when the clutch is depressed is indicative of a bad throwout bearing, but thats how it is on mustangs, it could be different on rexes, I dont know.

Could also mean something else.. just relaying my experience.  Throwout bearings go bad left and right on mustangs, and I was getting the whining on my car before I traded it (though it was minimal and I didnt really hear it in gear.  but I definitely heard it in neutral and it did go away when I pushed in the clutch).

when in neutral it sounds like theres grains of sand rotating in there and its really faint, but when accelerating in 4th or 5th its much louder, high pitched and changes with the rpm.
