Noise from the rear
« on: April 24, 2009, 03:40:49 PM »
there is a metal on metal rubbing noise coming from the rear  the noise increases as my speed increases im not sure if its a wheel bearing i checked it over the winter there was like no play up and down on the tire....im thinking it could have something to do with my brakes like rotor rubbing on the dust sheild......or axle assembly it gets louder when i make turns  this one is stumping me :-( im gonna check the up and down and side to side play of the tire right noow

edit i just read this site http://www.aa1car.com/library/2003/bf50360.htm

It sounds like a wheel bearing. Does it get quieter if you turn so that the weight unloads the tire making noise?
Eric

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

it makes noise straight and each way but i think when one side is unloaded the otherside makes the noise

i did the 12 and 6 grab and tryed to shake it it was fine......but when i would spin the tire freely in the air it would make that metal on metal rub noise

i have done wheel bearings on diffderent cars befor but they usually shake when you rock the tire ....mine do not

Yah, typically wheel bearings make the wheel wobble. Also, when you unload it, it should make less noise.

Double check your lug nuts. The other thing (this happened on my wifes car when we first bought it) the rear brake pads weren't installed correctly and eventually worked their way so they rubbed the rotor only when she turned or if the car was jacked up and we tried to spin the tire(s). I say pull the wheels and check your brakes.

Could be a siezed or partially siezed caliper too.  I had both a bearing and siezed caliper in my time with the old legacy and they sounded very similar.

It not a seized caliper per say, your pins are stuck and the caliper can no longer "float" as designed. If you can extract the pin, clean it up on a wire wheel, get a new boot kit (if possible) and regrease the pins with a synthetic grease (such as a nice grease used in a grease gun).
