diff fluid and tranny changing
« on: June 12, 2009, 03:12:00 PM »
ive seen people wrap the drain plugs with teflon tape so they dont leak on the rear diff

anyone else do this

are there any crush washers i should know about i dont think there is

what do you run in your tranny for fluid....i know theres a 80page long debate on tranny fluid

also fluid for the rear diff and which needs friction additives

PS IF ANYONE HAS SOME EXTRA S LEFT OVER I CAN HAZ MONEY FOR IT:-)

I've tried a bunch of fluids in my trans -- Redline, Amsoil SG, US cocktail, Extra-s.

USC was great, but having to swap it every 10K miles was a drag.  Extra-s is DA BOMB.

I have ~2 liters of Extra-s in my garage, but I plan on using them at the next swaparoo.

yeah extra-s seems to be the final word on fluid.  I don't think the rear calls for friction additive, our LSD's are sealed units.

I'm gonna get a jug of extra s for the wagon and the STi.

you are the man thank you

Pick up as much as you can from Nick (and just buy whatever else you need there - it's $7/quart cheaper than TiC)

ouch, that's some pricey fluid....I gotta do mine real soon too
i've got a bottle of the redline stuff for the rear diff left over from another time, is this stuff that much better? or should i save myself a few bucks, use the redline this time for the rear diff and the Extra-s for the tranny?

and so this isn't totally jacking the thread.....Nick, if he doesn't take your leftovers, I might be interested. lemme know how much you've got and how much you want for it

I do! I can be there tomorrow morning or anytime Wednesday.  I'm posting to reserve a spot if the price is right so let me know how much you want for the liquid and for the labor individually.  Thanks

i don't know if this was answered somewhere, but how much would a drum cost?  when i asked at a dealership in albany, the guy was a bit of a prick and just said "alot" and I was tired of dealing with him at that point, so i didn't push it

hell, that's not THAT bad!

Just to get this straight, you use the same stuff in the tranny and the rear diff, so about 3.8 qts for a 5speed and 1 qt for the rear diff....so we could get like 4 cars out of one barrel, about $36.50 a person?

For that price I'm in as soon as possible too

P.S. edit:
I've got a flexible funnel to help fill the tranny without removing the intercooler, and a hand pump thing to fill the rear diff if anyone needs.  What I don't have is the bit to remove the rear diff plugs :(
