STi Clutches
« on: August 17, 2009, 04:53:45 PM »
Ok guys.  So the clutch in my car is starting to slip.  It really only slips when I'm driving hard (launching, hard shift into 2nd) but what fun is that?  This winter I will be upgrading to a vf48 and I will be shooting for close to 300whp and 400wtq on straight 93, yes that is possible and I did not mix the numbers up.

What are my options?  I would like a quality clutch, I'm not cheaping out on this.  The car is my dd so I need something that slips nicely around town, with minimal chatter so the biddies don't get uncomfortable.  Oh and it has to hold the power, duh.

Thanks in advance!

About 40k.  Yes the car has been "driven aggressively" by previous owner and myself.  The car also had a downpipe and tune on it for a while when the last owner had it.

I'd recommend another OEM.  IF you're driving that hard, better for the clutch to bear the brunt of the trauma than further down the driveline.  When I was shopping around for the Baja's replacement I found an 04 sti with 104k on the stock clutch.  It had been autocrossed since new.

The smart-ass answer would be 'buy a honda, they don't have that pesky "torque" to wear that stuff out'.

Stock clutch will hold around 400wtq?
I'm looking at the Exedy Stage 1 right now.  Anybody have luck with that?

+1 my wife's Honda has 170,000 miles on the stock clutch.

Seriously I think OEM or slightly upgraded from that is your best bet. Clutches are cheaper than transmissions.

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

tranny's/gears aren't the worry with 6sp.  It's axles and that's only at 500+whp.

Stage one exedy sounds good.  Have you called any local shops like East coast swappers?  Even if I don't plan on buying through them I ask all the right questions (what have you installed b4, what do you like/recommend, how much for the clutch if you install it).  Then just buy it anywhere you find it the cheapest!

For whatever reason I forgot he had an STi despite it being in the thread title. Sorry.

it's easily forgivable since fred recently sold an sti clutch for a 5speed.  saying sti does not always mean 6sp.

CVR Motorsports has quoted me only $419 shipped for an Exedy Stage 1 so it looks like that is the best option right now.

Before I pull the trigger, does anybody have experience with other stage 1 clutches?

fwiw, exedy makes all oem subaru clutches, i would recommend them based off of that, and that is not a bad price. are you gonna do a flywheel while you have it apart?

Yeah I knew that lol.  That's why I looked at the Exedy's first.

I'm going to keep the stock flywheel.  Of course it will be resurfaced and I'll have it balanced as well.  I see no reason for an aftermarket one.

Sounds like you already had your mind set on the stage 1 but I thought I'd throw this out there just in case.

Hate to bring this back up, but my clutch just went at 38k on my 06 STI. I just put the ACT 6 puck sprung in with a streetlite flywheel, and I love it. Between that and my dom tune, its like a whole new car
