A.M.E.C. Malta-Madness Speedway Autocross! Nov. 7th

I have some very exciting news for all of you Capital District motor heads......

A.M.E.C. will be holding a "high" speed autocross on the pavement of Albany Saratoga Speedway 4/10ths mile oval on November 7th. This is not your usual parking lot deal with tight gates and twisty corners. This is for people who like to open it up and carry some speed through the pylon gates as they traverse the recently uncovered asphalt in Malta.

When: Saturday November 7th 2009 (rain date November 8th) Registration opens at 8 AM. First car off at 10 AM.

Where: Albany Saratoga Speedway on the Pavement!

Why: Because AMEC used to put on some of the most well attended fastest autocrosses around at Albany Saratoga Speedway. This was from the late 60’s until about 1976 when they covered the track with clay. “Back in the day” AMEC would pull 80 entrants to an autocross when other clubs running in parking lots were getting 30 mostly because of the venue. The course will be simple and fast, yet challenging. You will get 2 laps per run with a few gates here and there and a slalom on one straight away. A minimum of 3 runs per car and more if we can fit them in. We'll run right until dusk.


Scoring: Will be with an electronic scoring system.

Cost: $40 per driver. Spectator admission is free.

What to bring: any car that is safe to drive, street car, or race car, a helmet built in the last 15 years. Once again, spectator admission is free so bring your family and have fun watching from the grandstands. The track will have food for sale and bathrooms.

Prizes: Yup we will have trophies, this is a fun event. There are no year-end points battles so you can come for fun and will get a trophy if you do well in your class.

Classes: There will be a minimal number of classes for ease of registration and classing:

1. Stock Under 2.5 liters
2. Stock Over 2.5 liters
3. Prepared Under 2.5 liters
4. Prepared Over 2.5 liters
5. Modified Under 2.5 liters
6. Modified Over 2.5 liters
7. Open Class - Open wheel and home built race cars.

it would be if it was stock, stock 2.5 under because technically we have 2.457 liters engines Subaru just decides to round up.

I believe they put clay on top of it and has been that way for every they decided to look under and see if the pavement was any good and I guess it was in pretty good shape.

i'm guessing they'll follow an scca-style formula and multiply turbocharged engine displacement by 1.6 (or whatever) and make that your 'displacement' for the race.

STOCK- Street driven with no modifications. Air filter and intake, cat back exhaust or coffee can muffler allowed.
PREPARED- Street driven with modifications to the engine and or suspension.
MODIFIED - All other street type vehicles. Anything with DOT "R" compound tires. ALL turbo cars.
OPEN - Open wheel and home built race cars.

I interpret that to mean all turbo cars end up classified as "MODIFIED", and then you go into 1 of 2 sub-classes based on your engine size - up to 2.5l or over 2.5l.

I guess they capped the entry. Anybody else get in? There are two people running Fort GTs. Wonder if they are in the same car.

they say they got up to 70 in a stock honda at one point in the testing of the track so it sounds like it is going to be a good time

Attention all who will read this tonight before the big game tomorrow, A huge thanks to the team of people who arrived today before 10am and worked until about 2pm setting up, changing, testing and then adjusting the course for tomorrow big day.( Dave B, Bruce C, **** V, Pat S, Rob R, John S, Stan W, Humpty and Ed Lyons... what a bunch of get er done people)

In case you were wondering how things turned out.....well....lets say the advertised "high speed" part is accurate and on point. Reaching speeds of nearly 70mph in a stock four door honda (car owner will remain nameless for one mans sake) with no air pressue adjustments and two people in the car...

Everything is set and the plans are made for the biggest AUTO X event in the Capital District in over 40 years. Tomorrow's weather is mostly sunny, highs in the mid 40's... so the condensed air just adds to the HP game..

We are excited, Mr Richards the track owner is excited and the response to this idea has been well, more then anyone had expected.

The course is smooth flowing and fast.

No one should be disappointed to say the least. If fact, accuracy is the name, speed is the game. You wanted fast....you got wide open throttle boys and girls.

I'm getting to bed early as the 5:30am mark comes early here. Remember: Gates open at 7:30am sharp. The sooner you arrive the sooner you'll be ready... Remember some warm clothes and your helmet, dump all the crap from you car...floors, pockets and trunk area. Make sure your tires are on tight and so is your head.

Running today was great. The track was well set up for speed. Not the best of conditions with the super cold, dirty track, and older pavement. Somehow, after a day of crappy driving with times in the 59's (plus cones), I pulled out an amazing run with a 53.79. I got third in my class which had all cars up to 2.5l with turbo or modified engines. I also got 4th overall. I beat a ford GT by almost a whole second and a lotus. Here is my run:

They are putting fresh track down next week and banking some of the turns. Going to be a fun season next year!!

Props to you man!  I had a good check out of your car. Liking the black wheels and the RA flaps.  You did a good job of getting through the first turn after the initial straight and I think you made up a lot of time there and the slalom.  I arrived at ~noon and the guy guy at the gate said how come you are not running, to which I replied the entry was closed when I found out about it last night.  He said they let some others join as some people dropped out

The same guy on the way out told me about the ice racing events at icerace.com.  I'll be up for that come winter
