Boost Gauge?
« on: November 12, 2009, 04:53:11 PM »
So, glowshift good gauges? I need a boost gauge for my 08 WRX...not only do I not know how to install it...I don't know who is a good company for it.

I had a stock one on my '04 so I never had to worry about it.

Its kind of a middle of the road to low end gauge, it will work but it is not most accurate gauge.  I have its rebranded brother Prosport in my car, no problems for 2 years now but it does read a hair low.  I use it as a fail-safe to make sure I'm not way overboosting.

they're relatively cheap, whats a middle upper level one then, that is "pretty" accurate...or good.

And how to install these fuckers?

installing them is cake...u just have to tap into your boost line and a good place to do that is right by the bypass valve.

i have a glowshift gauge and there not horrible but you definitely get what you pay for. i like the maddad series gauges and there not horribly expensive

Cool, I'll look into those. Gonna pick one up in the near future, gotta see what they look like to find a mounting place. Maybe get a pillar gauge tree thing.

I went with the Prosports because, IMHO, there didn't seem to be a great deal of difference between them and the middle to upper middle tier gauges.  It seemed like you really had to jump up to the likes of Defi to get good gauges.  Others will likely have different opinions.

I believe if you are anal/persistent enough you can get them to read correctly.

If you were to choose Prosport or Glowshift, I would go with Prosport for the simple reason that they market directly to Subys and my experience with their customer service was positive.

MY GOD....my poor subie. If I tried to do that myself without adult (professional) supervision, I would probably cause it to catch fire much like Homer Simpson does when he does something wrong.

ProSport gaugess are easier than that install, their elecric boost gauge uses a sending unit, you run vacuum line only in the engine bay, and the only thing you bring into the car is 2 electrical wires.  not hard at all, and you won't blow anything up  :-D  just pay attention to details, and be patient with running wires to make sure you have the right lengths and it's not in the way of anything else

That said, I found my ProSport boost gauge read just a hair lower than my AccessPort too.....about .5-1psi or so

So yeah.....Professional supervision will be needed :D

Maybe if I can get my neighbor to help me then I'll be ok.  He's a Audi Master Tech.

Defi, Greddy, Omori

Those are all good gauges. They're not too expensive if you purchase used.

Defi offers the 52mm "Racer" series gauges that do not require the use of the Defi Link Controller unit, which makes them a good bit cheaper. You can get the Defi XX Racer boost gauge for under $200 new (I can tell you the exact quote I got in September later this evening).

yikes, $200 for the cheap one?  now I remember why I went for the ProSports, I spent less than $200 for Boost, EGT and Oil Pressure together

I've had really good experiences with my Prosport boost and oil pressure gauges. Not a single complaint here.

got any tips on how yours was set up Laren?  almost everyone I've ever heard talk about ProSports says to expect about 1psi low on the boost.

Mine sits a hair below zero when the damn thing's off, so that's probably a whole different problem from most, but I'm afraid to crack it open and try adjusting the needle  :|

You should expect a gauge to read spot on. If it doesn't, give the company a chance to make it right and give you an accurate gauge, or spend your $$ elsewhere.

Don't use the crappy vinyl hose that is supplied w/the gauge, that is the first thing to try.  Use regular rubber vacuum line.  My guess is you already tried this though...

I did use the cheap stuff it came with the first time around.  when i finally get around to putting them into this car I'll be trying a better vacuum line.

on the plus side, it came with WAY more of that cheap clear tubing than I needed, and it worked well for brake bleeding

The bad boy JDM STI  (Made by Defi)

 :-o :-o :-o
$370 per gauge???  cheeeezus!

now, if someone said you should be able to expect any gauge to read accurately, no matter what the price is....why the hell would anyone pay $370 for the same type of gauge you can get for $50-100?

Find me a gauge for $50-$100 that matches the 08+ STI/WRX gauges and has the same quality as a Defi.

I dunno about matching, I was just saying that if Matt's comment that you should be able to expect the same accuracy (quality) from any gauge was true, then that's an insane waste of money.

If you read back, I said before that the ProSports, in that price range, were close but not always completely accurate, so they're obviously not AS good as the higher end ones......but good lord, you can't convince me there's any part of that, besides the damn name, that makes it worth an extra $300.  And I'm highly opposed to paying just for a name  :idiot2:
