Wheel bearing..
« on: November 14, 2009, 10:47:27 PM »
Well I have been thinking it was a problem but when ever I tried figuring out what was wrong it would go away. But after todays meet I can hear what I believe is the front passanger wheel bearing going. It only happens at really slow speeds, speeds above 75-80 and mainly when I am slowing down. So what do you guys think? wheel bearing? or something else?

Yeah, those are what I experienced.  It will also be noticeable when turning/going around curves.  You may get by for a while w/o fixing it but you will know when you need to pull it off the road, it will get real noisy amongst other things.

we let a rear one go (in the 99 L) for months and months.  it so loud we had to yell to talk.  when we finally got it done we were amazed how quite the car was again.  I have some moaning coming from the right rear of my '96.  I'm gonna keep my ear on it and wait a little longer.

Slightly cheaper possible problem:  frozen brake caliper.  I had a wheel bearing in my '95 Legacy L go, and it made the same sound as a partially siezed rear caliper at the same speeds (the other rear wheel).  The shops i've gone to for bearings in that car charged me 250-300 total, yours shouldn't be more than that.

mmm sounds like that could be it because when I step on the brakes it is much more apparent.

A a quick, though not always determinative, way to check for a frozen caliper or stuck caliper is to check for unevenly worn pads.

marty and I just went and looked at it closer and it is more of a creaking noise. What does a ripped cv boot sound like.  :x

what happens when you drive it in reverse?  i had a passenger wheel bearing go on my OBS a few years ago and it made an awful creaking sound in reverse.

no idea about the cv boot.....but I think I've got a front passenger bearing going too.  It makes the most noise when taking a hard left turn, coasting in nuetral, off the brakes.  Is yours any different when turning and putting pressure on that corner?

It's a creaking noise, And when he steps on the brakes it gets REALLY loud. I think it might have something to do with the caliper, But we will know later when we take the caliper off and inspect it.

It's not a grinding sound, It's like a leaf spring sound on metal. Like it scraping or something.

That sounds like a caliper issue.  Actually just like when I had a caliper freeze up on my RS many, many moons ago.

Think I am gonna take the caliper off completely and Drive it inthe parking lot really slow and see if the sound goes away.. LOL

With the car parked you could actually get it to creak by wiggling the top of wheel in and out. I think its a frozen caliper too.

Well we found the problem,

The symptom was a little creak every rotation of the tire , a creak every three feet in travel , not very loud, and when he braked it was VERY LOUD. At first I thought maybe it was a wheel bearing but their was no excessive noise when we drove in circles left or right so ..
We took the tire off and inspected the passenger side caliper.
I took the front brake pads off and found the inside brake pad had a hairline crack horizontally across the pad, About 50% waythru.
Pete's rotors are a little warped in the front,  one of the pistons on the caliper was somewhat Seized. This in combination with the crack we found in the inside brake pad was the cause of the creak every couple of feet. You could push on the pad and hear the same sound.

I took a piece of wood and some channel locks and worked it until it broke free and I could get both of the pistons inside the caliper.
after that , we lubricated the slide plates and put everything back together and now no noise .
Now we can hear creaking in the back.. :x
"Pete get some brake pads for 25 bucks"

"Nahh, I am gonna get hawk pads!"
I recommended new rotors all the way around too.
LOL silly children..

glad you got it figured out, but I'm confused by one part.....is getting Hawk pads the current plan now? or were the pads that were on their and cracked a set of Hawks?
