Raw Fuel smell recall WKV-21
« on: December 02, 2009, 11:09:50 AM »
Subject: WVK-21 Recall: 2002 – 2003MY Impreza WRX Cold Weather Fuel Line/Hose Seepage

Subaru has initiated a voluntary regional recall to replace specific engine fuel lines and hoses on
approximately 5,724 2002 and 2003MY Impreza WRX models registered in 16 “cold weather”
states located in NOAA Climate Zone 1. The affected states are: Alaska, Colorado, Iowa, Idaho,
Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York,
South Dakota, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Campaign code WVK-21 has been assigned to this regional recall.

In extremely cold temperatures, a certain engine fuel line/hose may temporarily seep some fuel
during initial cold engine start up. If this condition occurs, vehicle occupants may notice the smell
of fuel. To correct this condition, affected vehicles will require replacement of the engine fuel
delivery line and hose. A special repair parts kit will be available in the near future. The kit
contains all parts needed to complete this repair.

Additionally, Subaru will follow up in early CY 2010 with letters to owners that it will provide an
extended 12 year/unlimited mileage warranty for this condition to owners of affected vehicles
located in the remaining 34 states.

General information concerning this Recall:
• Campaign Bulletin WVK-21 will be posted on the Techinfo.Subaru.com website during
the week of December 7, 2009. The Bulletin will contain additional information concerning
identification of affected vehicles, repair and claim submission procedures.
• Notification letters will be mailed to vehicle owners registered in the 16 affected states on
or around December 16, 2009.
• VIN lists will be sent to dealers located in the affected 16 states on or around December
14, 2009.
• Information concerning repair parts availability will be released in the near future.

about time Subaru!!!!

Too bad this doesn't include my car - I definitely get the smell on cold mornings.

Glad to hear it is for the WRX's though, know there are a bunch here that have complained about it.
Eric

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

My car is still registered in NY. If they don't send me the notice can I still take this to a NY dealer and request the fix be done? Any Idea when the campaign begins? I need to do it ASAP because my car needs to be registered in Jersey ASAP too. My car had this problem BAD last year to the point of pooling fuel on the head/ block... I'd hate to see (smell?) it happen again this winter.

it looks like you will get a letter early in 2010 if you are registered outside the 16 states listed. I would register your car on mysubaru.com this way you get all the info from subaru.

It should be about 2-3 weeks until the letters are mailed and parts become available. I'll let you know when the parts have arrived.

If you haven't already signed up at mysubaru.com i would now, it is the best way for subaru to keep you up to date and notify you of important information.

lol it would've taken less time to read the whole thing then it would to type that questions and have to read a response.

therefore, I'm going to make this answer long and drawn out so you don't just get a possitive or negative one word response. The original quote reads in one part: To correct this condition, affected vehicles will require replacement of the engine fuel delivery line and hose.  I would take that to mean they will indeed be replacing the engine fuel delivery line and hose if your car falls into the vehivle identification number span that they consider to be truly affected by this situation.  Now, I'm going to tack some other useful information* onto the end of this so you don't just skim to my last sentance: Reading aloud, introducing print materials to your children and encouraging positive reading experiences all have a beneficial effect on a child's learning and literacy. Children who are read to at least three times a week are almost twice as likely to score in the top 25 percent in reading than those who are read to less than three times a week. As a result, reading to kids can have lasting effects on their educational level in the future.

I just found about this today while surfing nasioc.  About time, I'll be checking the mail every day for that letter.

As soon as the temperature dropped yesterday, mine started doing this again.  Was pretty bad on the way home today.  I'm ascared to get this done at Goldstein though after all the bad reviews.  Hate to do that to ya, but I might make the trip up to Capitaland Fred.

it replaces the fuel rail under the intake manifold, and 3 new rubber lines, you need to remove the intake manifold and tgv housings to do the job. it is rather time consuming.

hmmmmm, so if someone was planning on removing their intake manifold anyway...say, to install an IxizIce spacerand make a turbo/inlet install easier, maybe TGV deletes, or an intake manifold port....this would be the time to do it, huh?
