Drivetrain.
« on: December 11, 2009, 07:57:07 PM »
I really think I have a problem with my drivetrain :|  . In fact I think it MIGHT be the Rear differential but I am not sure .

At first I thought that maybe I had a issue with like a Cracked Cyl, and wanted to do a compression test. But If i am sitting their and push the clutch in coasting RPMS drop down to nothing and I can actually feel the Wobble sensation. and it gets more pronounced as the car slows down.

Noticeably between 2000-3000 rpms is when I feel it. Sometimes it feels like it literally a bad clutch and the car kinda jumps forth and back as I am pulling out or starting out.. IF , and IF i punch it It is very unnoticeable. I am gonna throw the car up on jack stands soon once I have some gas money to make it up to Bryons.

Now I was thinking If I jack up the rear of the car  {05 Subaru WRX Wagon} I have a Viscous Limited slip Differential Correct?  So If I turn one wheel forward the other wheel should turn the same direction correct?  Since it has Plates in it that when forces are applied it opens and causes the inside wheel to spin freely.

So if the differential is Fine.. both tires should turn the same direction , and if the diff is fubared then the opposite wheel would spin the opposite direction correct?

Any Input would be appreciated.. It's fucking cold out and i don't wanna drop the rear diff cover yet..

If it is Somthing with the Tranny. This should be covered by saab, even thou I am out of warranty , I just had the whole damm thing rebuilt by NC 2000 miles ago.. I might have to drop the tranny and open it up then put it back together to drive it Capital land to tell them.  IF it just a rear diff Fred will hook me up and I will throw that in..

Any experience with symptoms?

marty,

Which tires are you on at this point are they cupped??  where do you feel the wobble, steeringwheel pedals?  Did you feel this before the recent clutch install?  trying to rack my brain a little to get a better idea of where the noise is coming from.

fwiw, whenever i've had mine in the air the wheels spin different directions unless in gear.

oh and mine makes a crazy shuttering sound on decel between 3000-2000rpm.  adjusting my tire pressure cured most of that sound.  less rotational mass in the flywheel=more nvh due to lack of material to dampen the sound.  hope that helps.

No the problem was their BEFORE.. This is why I thought it was clutch slip... It's not the tires.. i just put on my All seasons and it's doing the same thing. Let me change the Wording .. Wobble is the wrong word... Lets try Forth and back / Bucking / Slipping clutch sensations/ detonation/Feels like something is broken in the drive train.  :buck2:  but the weirdest shit is sometimes I don't feel it and sometimes it's like WHOLEY shit wtf..

I feel it in all gears.. Reverse.. Neutral..  Ithink My PRNLD IS BROKEN  :2funny:  Seriously I wouldn't doubt the Rear diff.  Prolly something like this..

Looking at a Cusco Rear Diff If it is fubared.. Looks like a grand and then Labor costs. Then no worries.. Othewise IF i replace the stock Diff IF it is the problem I do believe it will just happen again.

But then again if I can set up the car so that Three Wheeling don't happen I might be ok..

next year I WILL have Koni Inserts, Ground Control, and Ball joint extenders.  So the Wheel should not go a foot in the air.. LOL

Will only know when I swap out the fluid that Fred is getting soon, That is when I will take a look at the plug.. Rear diff is magnatized correct?

does it jerk whenever you come on or off the gas lightly at low speeds? mine does that, and it's bugging the crap out of me, I'm led to suspect its the center diff??

i seem to have what actually sounds like the same problem, some times it feels like a slipping clutch almost like there's a glazed over spot or something on the flywheel. i just had the trans of replacing it due to a bad front diff, but the occasional "jerking" on part throttle accel is still there in second gear. i took the psi plate off and inspected the clutch and flywheel and there was nothing wrong that i could find.
