Cars tend to get banged up at those. Think of that jeep video not posted long ago before you go do them in your DD.

Awesome to go watch, but any day I'm standing on the ice is a good day (cars or not).
Eric

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

I looked into these after the malta autox. These guys put it on. I was all pumped up for it until I saw that classes race together not one at a time like in autox. With a surface that slick and no pre-requisites for racers I could not trust everyone out there. Would LOVE to get a beater and do it though if anyone has any ideas.

I didn't realize you ran together or that it was hard on your car. Maybe I'll show up and watch one on see what it's all about. Where's the link to the vid with this jeep.

Yeah so anyways.......... Lol. No way I'm going to trust the other bunch of loose nuts behind the wheel if it's gonna be like that. I'll still go up to check one out .  Perhaps we can get a list lfor a caravan going in here closer to the time. It would still be a good excuse to hang out!

As long as I'm in town and not ice fishing I'd definitely be up for that - close to home and it really is a ton of fun to watch.

My uncle used to drag race his sled (Thundercat 1000 with fully race built motor) but has since detuned it so he can ride it recreationally without it breaking down all the time (mainly the problem was carbon fiber reeds breaking in the cold and he had a problem with the oil canister sucking itself dry since the shop didn't install a vent and left him stranded 100+ miles out in the Canadian wilderness).

I've seen quite a few of these.. last one i went to, I parked on the ice to watch and at the end of the day there was 8 inches of water around my car.. couldn't get back in without getting wet.. Just FYI. Dont park by the plowed snowbanks.

Stumbled upon this on youtube.  Its an Audi R8 review, but there are a couple shots of some wrx's shredding up the course.  One yellow bugeye looked familiar.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Deq-bb_gbGo&feature=related

One reason could be if his car fell through the ice he could get out of his car and not drown, or its like autox you just have to.  :buck2:

I would not show up to an ICE RACE without STUDDED TIRES.  That would be like catching fastballs from Nolan Ryan without wearing a cup ...   :-o

I thought about doing this, but I think a beater with studded tires is what you want to drive, especially if you want to be competitive. Don't feel like risking my car.

MoHud might be starting up ice racing too.  I'd honestly only do it in a beater, Like my E30, which is getting studded snows next year anyway.

AMEC (icerace.com) is most definitely wheel-to-wheel, all the time. They have the Blizzak class and it's rather safe (contact gets you ejected from the event). I know people who have done it with their DDs, but.. yes it's out of my comfort zone.

---> MoHud might be doing a rallycross on ice late February. It's a lake near Pittsfield, MA. Details are sketchy, but it would be SCCA-sanctioned, run under rallycross rules. That means a format similar to autox. Different rulebook, event timetable, etc. But it's one car on-course at a time. By this time next month, the details will be nailed down. It's the first of its sort by the club in years (10+?) so they're capping entries, hoping for a mostly knowledgeable group of people and a successful event. I wonder whether this could lead to more MoHud rallyx in the future. That'd be neat.

Tom M - want to co-drive one of the RHD scoobs? We're picking up two more soon - one of which is the best of the litter, should make it through the event. But no clean title so I'm thinking trailering? Otherwise I'm without a car and only working the event.

^^^ That would be something safer that I would consider doing. My question is,  when they say its on ICE,  I would want studs.. If it was mostly packed snow, then I can see snow tires being good, but on ICE, I picture a course on a sheet of ice where I cant imagine snow tires will help all that much.

Maybe im wrong.

I've heard that it's not as bad as you might think, but then I've heard the exact opposite as well. ("15mph drifts around a corner, seeing an ice fisher waving and probably having more fun") The chairs of the event are currently investigating whether home-studded tires are allowable, in which case your options get pretty gnarly.

I feel like if AMEC is able to run their unstudded Blizzak class successfully for the past few years, there must be SOME friction coefficient out there to be had.

Gah, I was there when this dude did this. They drove around in very slow circles forever while we wanted to race... The yellow bugeye is owned by Snophun over at NASIOC.

First AMEC ice race is this weekend at Caroga. I'll be there. I usually race in a 98L wagon, but as the blower in the heater just crapped out in it I reckon I'll be there in my 02 WRX.

Yes, AMEC is all wheel-to-wheel (except for the "studs on ice" races that the club used to run) but it is reasonably safe. I think we had two instances of contact in the SL class last year, one pushed up hood, one ripped off bumper. There is a risk of crashing but, if you drive safe, you'll probably be okay -- but of course if you can't afford to fix it don't race it, and that should apply to all types of racing :p

It's incredibly fun and about the best way to increase your confidence when driving in less than ideal conditions. And you'd be surprised the grip a good set of unstudded tires can provide on the lake...

Oh, and apparently the MOHUD event is tentatively planned for February 28th on Lake Onota in Pittsfield, MA. I'll probably take the wife out for this one. Like you guys she's not into the wheel to wheel stuff :)
